Is the 951 platform still competitive and why?
Please "edumacate" me on whether the 951 platform makes a worthwhile track car, how and why. What classes can you drive it in, with what preparation, etc.
Thanks in advance.

I think that there was a time, 5-6 years ago, when modded 951's where *the* fastest bang-for-your-buck track car.
Of course, as cars get older, that's changing. I think an early 405hp Z06 with higher mileage for around ~$20-$30K is the best bang-for-buck car today.

I should've clarified that I was referring to Porsches only. Need to learn more about locally available classes, but was wondering what classes people with 951 track cars drive in over in North America. Thanks.

the 951/968 S2 cars do well in PCA E class as well as in the GTS-2 class in NASA. NASA is 14.5 lbs per hp so you can "tune" your turbo to fit if you like in NASA

Also NASA 944SuperCup series, which is a slight variant on PCA Stock rules. Interior not required, and some body panels can be FG but overall weight must be made. These cars can also run in PCA Club racing as SP3 class. Mine can run either way - F Stock or SP3.
In GT catagories, its fairly easy to get a reliable 350HP with off the shelf parts. 400Hp is possible, but those engines tend to be highly engineered, or grenades, or both.
Luis, you need to find a good example running in your area, and try to get a drive. I'd never driven a 944 of any kind before buying my car to run 944SuperCup. I was 911 guy. I can tell you that you can have a LOT of fun in these cars. They are perfectly balanced, and you can certaily do things that would have you snake bit in a 911. Not saying one is necesarily better than the other, but drive one before you buy.
The Porsche thing is important to many of us, but the fact is that there are some killer values in other marques. I may be excommunicated for that comment, eh?

The Porsche Club Racing rules have slanted against turbos for 2008, but a 944T can still be very competitive. It just isn't the slam dunk that it was a couple years ago under the old rules. There is one very fast 944T that runs in the PCA GT3S class that ran a 1:55 at the recent Watkins Glen club race. That's pro-driven Cup Car territory ...

His fastest at the Clash at the Glen was a 1:57.775. He runs in GT2R. That's SMOKIN' fast.

Thanks for all the leads and information about classes. I've been perusing the PCA Racing and NASA rules and hope to learn more about how they work.

Checkout www.nasaproracing.com for the rules.
It is definitely nice to be able to race both PCA and NASA just to have more options.
