Default Urethane bumper cover repair

Any of you guys out there repaired a urethane bumper cover?

I have done a little research and they actually make plastic welders with plastic welding rods for different kinds of plastic. I am just wondering if anyone has done it and how difficult it is.

3M makes a 2 part "epoxy" type stuff that is specifically made to repair plastic panels. I have a tube at home but dont remember what it is called. Its like $40 a tube but works great and can save you $$$ on buying a new bumper cover. How bad is the damage?

Not bad. I have a hole about the size of a quarter from the cover being punctured. From what I have read you have to find the type of plastic and then get the appropriate
repair material.

Thanks of the info.
Please keep them coming if anyone else has anything.

The 3M kit works well. Having two kids with cars makes it an essential alternative to replacing bumper covers on a regular basis. You'll also need 3Ms paint prep for plastics, which prepares the surface to accept paint.

Hey;

In my experience, Porsche plastic bumpers do not weld. This was on cars up to the 964 era, so this may have changed. There are many companies making bumper repair materials. 3M, Norton, Fusor, etc., etc. They all work. If you simply have a hole in the middle of a plastic area, any of theses will work just fine. If a cover is ripped through the edge, it can be glues back together, but it will never hold under stress.

Deepen the hole and/or bevel the edges deeply, and goop it up!

John, thanks for that.
This is a 964 bumper that I want to repair. I will give the 3M stuff a go.

If you can patch the plastic on the inside of the bumper you can then use bondo on the outside. I had great results with fiberglass using this method which you can read about HERE. If the fiberglass resin will stick to the plastic I would just do that. It's easy to use then you just do the bondo on the outside which is the same as using drywall mud.
I can give you more details on the process if you decide to go that route.

You can use the 3M stuff in conjuction with a reinforcing material, of course. I've used fiberglass mat, and some scrap stainless steel wire mesh on various repairs.

To John's point, these repairs are most successful on holes or small tears. Its tough to repair a large tear that extends to the edges of the plastic with sufficient strength hold up under rough treatment.

Thanks guys for the info. The bumper has no tears and the hole is centered enough to get a good scab on the inside to back up the hole.
