What is a tire trailer called?

TomR,
The trailer is about one hour west of Toronto (2hrs from Detroit or 1.5 hrs from Buffalo). I thought you were in NY but CO is way too far to go for a tire trailer. By the way, my 968 has a full cage and it fits all four wheels, tire jack and some other accessories in the hatch and front passenger seat no problem.

I used to pull a SouthSports TrackTrailer with my Carrera. I had it rigged to carry bicycles up top and it was a great setup. I had a hitch custom made that I now have fitted to my Boxster, it bolts into the nerfs. I would cruise at 90 all night with no problem. It was the hot ticket for DE.

Southsport Trailer brings back an unpleasant memory.
I, too, was looking for a tire trailer and called Southsport and got the most nasty, foul-mouthed on the rag woman I ever talked to in my life. I wonder they are still in business.........
I got mine from Harbor Freight, too.

I have a tire trailer which I used on my 996TT. Large enough for 4 large tires and large weatherproof tool box. I have photos but they are too large to insert here. I would also sell the hitch and wiring that is also on the car if interested. I am in Weschester, NY. $ 250 for trailer with local pickup. Email me for photos if interested.

My Southsport trailer lost one of the stub axles on the way home from Pocono. That was interesting -- seeing sparks flying behind me, and the nasty scraping sound of metal against asphalt.
Got out figuring that I need to replace my flat tire - but there was no axle to put the spare onto!
Fortunately, there were several NNJR members (including the club president, half of team TNT). David and Arlene stopped, we rolled my tire trailer into their rig, and I wasn't left beside the road.
Before I sold my Southsport, I replaced both axles with beefier ones - twice the load capacity as the originals.
Note: if you still have a Southport tire trailer, especially the older ones with the stub axles, you may want to check and/or replace them...

you need to repack the wheel bearings on those SouthSports every year or so, especially if you leave yours outside behind the rose bushes. Any tire shop can do it, and it's cheap insurance against a hassle.

Harbor freight 4'x4' trailer w/ 12" wheels
JC Whitney hitch (mounts to spare tire well & rear bumper)
small piece of plywood mounted to trailer frame
utility box from wal*mart mounted to sheet of plywood
wheels (4 - 15"x7") just slip nicely into the rear portion of the frame
wiring harness from wal*mart - just clips onto wires going to rear taillights.
I have noticed that the bare metal of the frame does put some 'dents' in the tires (goes away in no time once you mount them to the car though), so I'm planning on getting some PVC pipe (split up the side) to put on the frame and provide a larger pad for the wheels to sit on.
I'd also like to figure out a way to get a pole to go through the wheel centers & hold them down. If I put the tires onto the trailer while still hot, as the cool off they sink into the frame a bit & loosen the straps... sometimes enough for them to 'fall off' (the straps - the tires never really move).
