Gentlemen, I'm sorry. I've been away for a few days with my wife and friends. I'm not somebody's wife, just a newbie anxious to start racing, and I made a mistake. I apologize. I should have known and never brought it up, BUT-
I have not laughed so hard in a while- thank you! My favorite:
"Racing makes Heroin addiction seem like a slight craving for something salty" (or something like that).
Now, I am not sure what Heroin addiction costs, but I was not under the impression it was cheap.......
Absolutely hilarious!!!!!

The bad thing was that I was reading these in bed---on vacation---with my wife...I'll see you on the track... in 2015... if my son gets some sort of schoraship to college.

That seems cheap? Is the denial the fact that it really cost more than $30k and you can't/won't admit it?

I agree with DogInBlack....this thread has been hilarious to read through. It's nice to see we all realize that this addiction is crazy, stupid, EXPENSIVE....and one of the best things you can do in life!!

For most, racing changes your entire life. It's a level of excitement you can't get anywhere else. All of us are competitive by nature, but now you get to prove it and "show us what you got" on a much bigger stage....... And it also teaches most of us how to lie: how to lie to your spouse ("But honey, it doesn't cost much at all. Tires? They give them to us to race with, really") , how to lie to your friends at home that don't race ("You should have seen me, I passed 3 Cup cars in my stock 914!!"), how to lie to your friends that DO race ("I was passing everyone, didn't you see me coming up in your mirrors by the end of the race?"), how to lie to the stewards ("It was a mechanical issue, not my fault"), and most importantly, how to lie to yourself (Just take any of the posts above - it's called "DENIAL").

Yep, racing changes your life alright...

kids' braces

I am completely in control of this habit!

Just upgraded my brake pads yesterday.

My wife used to complain about the running costs of the 964 Cup (diesel, lodging, tires, shop prep and maintenance time, gas, entry fees, etc). IIRC, it would be $1500/weekend or so.
(She now looks back at those days with fond nostalgia, since my son's kart weekend running costs are 4-5x that.)

So if you run the 20+ race OVRP season you're saying you spend $80k+/year on karting? Eh, I better get out before I start if that's the case.

For autocross, maybe! but then again, even that would only be $30 per 3 min of racing. (kind of) $10 per minute.

I tell these auto x'ers that with road racing, you get 100min for $500. a bargain at $5 dollar a minute.

and even look at golf. you dont go golfing to walk around, you can do that anywhere so, call it 10 seconds per swing. your a good golfer, so 100 swings.
$200 for the day on a good course , so near $15/min.

Racing is cheap!

Got to love racer justification!

I went to a sports psychologist thinking that would improve my driving I forgot to factor that in. If I admitted it cost more then I wouldn't be in denial.

Sorry, I was referring to National level karting (Snap On/IRL Stars of Karting series, Florida Winter Tour, Rotax Grand Nationals, etc).......very much different from local club level on all fronts (tires, engines, etc).
