Too bad the way back machine doesn't go into the late '70's when we could see (and re-live) the 935's in anger. Damned impressive and quite life changing for a certain 18 year old wandering the track and paddock from near-dawn to dusk at Sears in 1980. John Paul Jr. was my hero. For awhile, anyway......

Sadly, 962's were quite out of their prime at that point. Nissan had pumped mega $$$ into Devendorf's program, then Toyota into Gurney's program........then they all went away after '93. (Except for the oddball LeMans rules loophole stuff.) That Toyota was damned amazing to watch at Daytona, though. And I pretty much knew it would be the fastest car to ever hustle around that road course.

I was talking about why I wished Speed was going to start showing races with the '86 series.

Then it would be worthwhile to go to the beginning of the modern prototype era with the 956, or even the March and Lola chassis that got flat sixes stuffed into them. Remember, Porsche wanted to just **** on us over here when John Bishop held firm with his "driver's feet behind the front axle centerline" rule.

Here's the press release my friend who's doing the series put out:

From: "Marshall Pruett" <Marshall.Pruett@speedtv.com>
Date: March 27, 2008 1:35:36 PM PDT
To: "Marshall Pruett" <Marshall.Pruett@speedtv.com>
Subject: ALMS Video: IMSA Memories, Sears Point GTP 1989

All--here's the first of our new bi-monthly web video feature, 'ALMS/
IMSA Memories.'

>

Thanks to our friends at the American Le Mans Series, we've been given
permission to dig through the archives and bring classic ALMS and IMSA
broadcasts to life on our mighty web video player.

Edited down to the most exciting parts, the two hour original race is
now on SPEEDtv.com and AmericanLeMans.com in the form of four ten-
minute clips.

Also, I interviewed the '89 GTP champ and winner of this Northern
Californian event, Geoff Brabham, and the original broadcaster, Bob
Varsha, to share some of the magic about the cars and racing found in
the late '80's.

I also share my own tale from the weekend where I was in charge of
IMSA broadcaster/racer Tom Blackaller's SCCA Sports 2000 entry in one
of the support races.

I hope you enjoy--if you were fortunate enough to attend a GTP race,
the sights and sounds have surely stayed with you. If not, turn up the
volume, click the 'ZOOM' button to watch the videos in our large
format player, and revel in these incredible machines.

If you have people you think might appreciate the feature and videos,
feel free to forward this email.

Respectfully,

Marshall Pruett

What's funny is that a friend of mine ended up with an amazing amount of the Electromotive parts bin in about '94 at giveaway prices. All sorts of BBS components, suspension pieces, transaxles. He had visions of mating the flat fan 935 engine he had (in a '67 912 made into a 935 K3, no less) with the transaxle and suspension into a homemade......well, we never were sure....... In retrospect, maybe a "GT1" before Porsche even came out with one! Wonder whatever happened to all that stuff.

I wish I would have saved more from those days, all that remains are banners, Camel GT Crew Passes, memories of damaged rental cars, the long gone sound of chirping turbo's from a GTP .
