The way I see it is there are 2 major benefits.
1. When you go off course and need to reenter it is extremely helpful to have more vision to the sides. There was one time last year where I had a spin in the rain and couldn't see back up the course or the corner workers. One of the corner workers ran down the wall and got into my field of view. I went out to the corner later to thank them for being so aware.
2. In the paddock it helps as well.
Other than that I have never needed any extra side to side vision while on course

If the HANS presses too hard on the shoulders your harness bar may be too low for where you are sitting. If use my seat pad bottom I sit just high enough that it starts to press into my shoulders. If I pull the seat pad there is NO pressure on my shoulders and it is very very comfortable. HANS has a recommendation for the downward angle of the belts to prevent discomfort. I suggest following that as it makes a difference for me.
