Default Towing w/ Ford F-150 or Touareg V10 Diesel

How would a Ford F-150 tow this?

2700 lbs V-Nose Thule Trailer
2750 lbs 911 RSA
Plus Tire, Tools, Fuel & Stuff
Total 6000-6500 lbs

I just rented a 08 F-250 Diesel, 14 mpg empty & towing 11-12 mpg with the empty Thule. It was like bring a gun to a knife fight way over kill.

What about a Touareg V10 Diesel.

Thanks
David

Both could tow the load you describe.

FWIW, I think the T-egg V10 diesel would be way cool....

No diesel option in the F150........yet.

Consider a Toyota or Nissan.

You might want to rethink this statement. This set a world record.

Touareg tows a 747

The diesel is an amazing rig...

I really liked the new Toyota Tundra until I read this thread: All Known 2007 Toyota Tundra Problems

http://www.tundraheadquarters.com/bl...ndra-problems/

Check out the video under this heading:
2) Highway Bed Bounce

The only advantage to the Touareg for me is my wife will drive it as her daily driver and I can keep driving my Mini. If I get a pick-up it will be my daily driver, but I would rather tow with the pick-up.
That's my dilemma...

Anyone towing with the F-150?

Safe towing is not about rated capacity or how a tow vehicle does up hills, etc. It is ALL ABOUT how the rig handles surprises. Is the tow vehicle controlling the trailer or is it the other way around.

I have plenty of friends who tow (or have towed) with F150 class vehicles and have also towed with F250 class stuff. They all say the same thing...
The F150 does fine with towing but God help them in a real emergency.

In the real world, you can not get the weight distribution perfect. In the real world you tow in poor conditions - rain or ice. In the real world, idiots think you have the same ability to stop as a sports car and cut you off. In the real world, truckers pull out in front of you way too close. In the real world, you will toss more stuff in the truck and trailer raising the load to 8-9000 lbs and/or way too much in the truck and overload the rating.

In the real world, a 3/4 or 1 ton will give you a far greater safety margin for this stuff. A 1/2 ton is close to it's limits when the **** hits the fan, as it will from time to time.

Would I tow that rig with a 150? Yes, if I had to for a limited time. But I would be damn careful too, knowing I was on the edge. I would quickly get to a 250 class vehicle to be safer.

See my post above. I have a couple of friends who were forced to move to F150's from F250's for towing. It works but they do not much like the risks.

This really has been debated to death. The issues arise from the shorter wheelbase of the SUV not how much weight it can pull. Short wheelbase of the tow vehicle can cause sway. Personally, I'd tow a light open trailer with the diesel Toureg in a heartbeat, but would go diesel 250 towing an enclosed trailer.

I've had scary moments towing an 850lb trailex with my Diesel Excursion.

David, I towed all last season with a new '07 F-150, SuperCab/6.5ft bed, 143in WB, 5.4L. I tow a car, trailer, tires, etc. that weighs around 4300lbs, plus 500 - 600lbs in the truck. So with 4800-4900 lbs, it isn't trying hard at pulling, braking or controlling the trailer. Don't underestimate the value of the longer wheelbase in the equation. I see around 14 - 15 mpg empty (daily driver), and 11-12 mpg towing (70 - 75mph). We just did the first highway trip in the truck when not towing and saw in the range of 15-16mpg (75-80 mph).

I think it would do very well pulling your new set-up.

I have no doubt it's a fine vehicle that has enough power to tow the enclosed trailer. Take the fully loaded trailer for a 5 hour drive on the interstate, preferably on a windy day, with tractor trailers passing you on both sides. I did it with a older 1/2 ton PU (no anti-sway or stabilzer equipment) once, made it home (barely) and bought my current 3/4 diesel and full Reese anti-sway combo. the next week... If it's rated to tow 10K and you use a full anti-sway/weight stabilzing setup it may be just fine.

Now if the Toureg could tow that 747 up Rte 17 in NY I would really be impressed!
