Default Race/track car - beater or baby

So which is it?

Is the car a your beater or baby?

Race car is a beater for me. My race car's job is give me shot to win and is never babied. I don't "abuse" it, but in the heat of battle I just hope she blows up "after" the checker.

baby. Since it's not a "race car", it doesn't have to win anything.

Edit: I don't use painters tape.

I decided after 2 track days in the 933 that I would never drive something I had an emotional attachment to. That car I am attached to.

I care about my track cars but I refuse to worry.

My race car gets a bath after a race weekend. When not in use it gets covered and has a nice carpeted parking space in the garage. Of course it's had a long vacation for the engine rebuild and is currently occupying a lift in a shop.

None of the above.
  • Less than concourse. No tape here. After all, the paint's got a certain "patina" to it.
  • Way above beater. Most can't believe I'm tracking such a nice looking car. I have had more than one inquiry regarding purchasing the car while attending a track event.

IIRC, the prevailing wisdom is to not drive anything on the track that you can't afford to wreck and walk away from.

If you can't afford to push it off of a cliff, you can't afford to be racing it...

I beat the snot out of my racecar.

However it gets a lot more attention in the garage than any of my previous cars that could be considered a 'baby'.

My car gets the living crap flogged out of it each time it goes out. So I voted beater.

It also gets the best and most frequent maintenance, as a track car should, because it is my *** on the line.

So I call her baby... besides aren't those the best kind? You love em, and still like to take them for a good hard romp on the weekends

Finally its offical "Cheeto Beater" It looks like it was painted with a brush!!

I have a 996. The best maintained vechicle in the fleet and babied off the track, serviced after every race, with leak down and complete inspection. Cleaned of all track "spooge" after every session, but at race time we run it to win.

It doesn't have to be an "afford" issue to be a baby. I can walk away from my car if I wreck it, but I do baby it (not "wash between sessions" baby, but I won't stretch a gear to get to the next corner for that last 10th). I track it because that's why I bought the car. If I wreck it, I will be sad. Then I'll buy another one
