PCA DE Question
I am new to the forums and have been lurking for quite a while. I really enjoy driving my car ('88 Carrera) and have thought about trying a DE event. A friend sent me this video, and now I am having second thoughts. Are all DEs like this, seemingly taking chances and possibly endangering others on the track? Is this the norm? I would be rather uncomfortable driving next to a guy/girl who seems relatively out of control. What are your thoughts? Should I just stick to autocrossing?

Your video did not work for me, but as a DE instructor for the last 23 years, I can tell you categorically that no novices (or even experienced drivers) are allowed to recklessly careen around the track. First, as a novice you will have an instructor planted next to you in the passenger's seat, as will all the others in your group. Second, you will be learning and progressing at your own pace. And third, there is no passing without consent, i.e. a clear signal from you that you want them to pass you.
That being said, you should try it. Most autocrossers that I know of get hooked on it, and learn quickly due to their comfort with handling the car close to it's limits.

Sorry for the link problem. I found it on the 996 forum as well, but don't know how to transfer the link over. Maybe someone can help me---I hit the Search function under the 996 and then typed "Clowned".
The official thread title is something like "I'm being clowned by non Porsche owners" and the first post contains the link. It worked for me. OK back to reading "Computers for Dummies" for me.

Holy bad driving. I heard it was a Chin event. If so, you won't find me near one anytime soon.

If that mess was at VIR on 7/4, then it was the Chin Motorsports/TracQuest event. Looks like the 'fast" run group with open passing. It should be titled "A Compilation of Stupid".
To answer the question, your experience at a PCA DE will not look anything like that. You will actually learn how to drive!

Well, I did not think it was that bad at first but it kept getting worse and worse. I had to stop watching.
I can tell the original poster, its nothing like that at the PCA events around here. That guy needs to keep his instructor in the car for a lot more seat time. Not so good car controll there for sure. For a driver with the type of lines and un-easy car controll I saw in the video, he definatly does not need to come up on and get so close to other cars. I hope this was just a video of his mistakes and he does not drive like that all the time...

You will never see this at a PCA DE or the whole group would have been black flagged.
If I were his instructor, this would have lasted until the second time he got loose.....

Given that it was in the open passing "fast" group, that WAS the instructor driving given the TracQuest format.

Bob, that is scary. VIR is usually very good at throwing the flag. I am surprised the TRACK did not pull the drover in. (Did I see orange hair coming out of his helmet?).
