$17K 964 or $27K 996. Extra $10K worth it?

Hehe.. me? ok?
It's 930 withdrawal.... if I can't get a boost fix soon i'm gonna CRACK! Add to that i'm trying to beat a 5.3 cyl SC to death and it's no wonder i'm thinking about water pumpers! I could buy a small farm in South Carolina for what i'm looking at spending this winter...
Chris - I do that myself and when I say complete ready to bolt in I mean complete. Exhaust, wiring harness, everything except the A/C compressor!

I once had a similar discussion with my mechanic and his answer was to stay with the 964. Even if the engine itself on a 996 is cheaper then a top end rebuilt on the 964, there are more things to break and less simple to work on. Even though after market parts are cheaper on a 996, my mechanic is more of a stock kind of guy.
What do you guys think??

I think mechanics stick with what they know as long as possible. There is a LOT of labor and knowledge required for a good air-cooled engine rebuild and a 996 is pretty much just an engine swap (even at 8 hours is still under $1000 labor). Shops survive on labor, it makes perfect sense to me.

Hold your horses there champ and don't be putting words in my mouth. It has 0 to do with dishonesty and everything to do with good business sense. If you don't agree fine but don't twist my words to say anyone is dishonest as I hold my shop and it's owner in the highest of regards and they are one of the best air-cooled shops in the Northeast.

I hate to add fuel to the fire, but you could pick up a 100k mile 993 for 27k and then you have a dry sump and some additional ponies over the 964... (you could find a high mileage 96 or later c2)
Have you considered that option?
