Well, I sold my F class 944 Turbo and I want to go back to a rear engine platform. Got my eye on a nice RS America, but with 2000-'01 996's so cheap, and the new proposed class changes, it got me thinking.

Would I be better off with the RS America or the 996?

Here's some points that got me thinking:

1. I can buy a nice '00-'01 996 for the same or less than an RSA.
2. The new proposed class changes for PCA club racing make the 996 more competitive.
3) A new engine for a 3.4 996 costs about the same as a top end rebuild for the RSA
4) The RSA is more friendly to the Garage Mechanic but the 996 is newer suspension technology
5) I really like the RSA body style and I'm not crazy about fried eggs on the front of my car
6) Not sure how fast I really want to go

So.......I am appealing to the Rennlist race GODS

My target budget for the next 6-12 months including car is about $45K, so some mods will happen. First Mod will be custom cage.

Who can spend my money the best?

Bill, if you are looking for a 3.4, Carl Tallardy has one (a 99) that is a COMPLETELY done club racer and runs very quickly for a 3.4. If you are interested, I could find out if he is selling it. Last year he built the same car in a 3.6 to club race and it is very fast.

For $45k, I'd buy a $20-$25k C2 coupe and spend the extra $20-$25k upgrading it. Oops, I'm not a race god or anything close to it.

I think the 996 will give you the best bang for the buck. There is one in the PCA Mart right now. 49k I think. Parts for the 996 are everywhere. Units sold and manufacturing style makes them very affordable. Fried eggs are much easier to live with than you think. In a race car anyway.
I guess you already decided what class you want to race in? That makes the biggest difference.

THis would most likely not include any race weekends because I don't think I could have the car completed by March for the TWS club race.

Just looked at that ad. To much bling for the money. Only thing usable are the cup car parts, seat and maybe harness. Extra wheels might be worth something. I could build one for less.

2001 996 available locally here for $29K from dealer w/50K miles. I figure for $20K more I could have a PCA legal car. With that one on the Mart, I'd still need to put in a cage, safety equip, different shock/springs, rear bushings..........might not be a good deal.

I don't know PCA classification rules. But is an RSA treated any differently from other 964s? The RSA model is becoming a collectible, now, and its prices are higher than comparable 964 models, without the more-significant mods that the Euro RS version got.

Why not compare the 996 to the 964, in terms of bang for the buck?

FWIW, I've heard that you want a 2000 or newer due to the E-gas and potential for upgrade to a 3.6. Is this correct?
