If only that were the case... We'd really have a good event then!

I want to come. But I don't want to be frustrated when I get there...
Brian,
Yes. Conversation at the end of the straight into turn one went:

Brian: Brake
Kevin: no man, I've got great brakes.
Brian: Brake! Brake! BRAKE!!!
Brian and Kevin: OH SH#!!
(moments later, in the grass and looking at the trees)
Brian: Next time you'd better $#% listen to me!
Kevin: okay.

Looking into the passing zones.

Not to get off topic, I really do want to go to this event, but I just don't want to be treated like a child.

If the instructors are supposed to be good drivers, and aware of their surroundings, aware of their limits, etc, etc, etc. Then why couldn't an event be held with "pass anywhere but the apex".

We can certainly handle more than 4 passing zones at VIR - most Blue or White groups could handle that.

It just baffles me sometimes...

Like I said, not trying to go off topic.

I'm making a decision as soon as a hard decision is made about passing zones. I can be treated like a kid at my own house by my wife and save all of the money on motel and towing if we're only gonna have 4 passing zones. Most of the instructors that will be there I'll bet are VIR regulars, and I'm guessing they are use to many more passing zones, or the "anywhere but the apex" routine.

Brian,

Just got word...open passing in the advance group (obviously that is the group you would be in).

Intermediate group as of right now just has 3 passing zones. I am inclined to believe if everything goes smoothly in the intermediate group we will be allowed more passing areas. This is not from the organizer, it's just my belief (hope).

As of 9am this morning there were 4 slots left in the intermediate group and 3 left in the advanced.

Brian, with open passing I expect to see you there!!

Oh he'll be there. Now if we can just get the run group order fixed and/or condense from 7 20min sessions to a smaller number of 25 or 30 minute sessions. Not quite sure why they are not using the usual 4 30min (2 before lunch, 2 after) format.

I'm curious why you think that having defined passing zones, thus reducing risk for the sponsoring organization, is a problem. This is a Driver's Education event, and some of us Advanced drivers and Instructors (not speaking for everyone, obviously) like the format how it is. Have I run full passing before? Yes, and it was enjoyable, though it definitely added more risk to the event. I've been driving DE's for over 12 years, instructing for 4 years, and have enjoyed them immensely.

If I wanted to pass anywhere and drive *****-out all the time, I'd get myself a fully prepped race car and go racing. I realize that there are rules in place for passing at DE's that minimize risk in a high intensity and inherently dangerous hobby, so everyone can have a safer weekend. There's a huge disparity in the equipment (go-fast and safety) among the cars, and to be responsible, shouldn't we drive according to the least common denominator?

If you think this makes me a "pansy" as your signature indicates, then so be it. Go racing and let us DE pansies have our fun.

Brian,

There has been a mistake. Advanced is FULL. You'll be in the Intermediate Group.

Is that a problem?
