Default Open Road Racing

I really want to do some sort of open road racing in my 81' 928. Is there anything around the east coast? This was the only one I could find.

http://www.openroadracing.com/

I would have to trailer out there for that. It would be nice to find something closer to VA.

thanks

I believe that there is a course or two in Texas as well. Too many people and not enough open road for anything East of the Mississippi

The openroadracing.com offering looks boring. You go straight as fast as you can. Isn't there a race track near you?

Yeah there is a bunch. VIR is close as well as Summit Point. Beaver run is a few hours away. I would love to race but:

A: Don't have enough time or money to own a race car.

B: Don't want to trash the one I have possibly running into other cars and walls.

C: I have no idea how to get into track racing.

Don't you have to take a course or school to race?

I was just looking into something fun and cheap compared to all out racing. Is there any time trials or single car PCA events where you can take your non-race setup car out on the track?

of course! get into the PCA DE program. you'll get instruction on track in your own car. then, if you want, you can step up to time trials. that way, you can compete without going wheel to wheel. there are stock classes.

Dude, it's not that simple. While there are straight sections that can be 8-10 miles long, they are typically seperated by sweeping turns. The technical sections can be several miles long and include sharp off-camber turn combinations that require significant slow downs....for example the gap section at Pony Express can be safely run at 120mph, but if you plan to average 145mph you have some serious time to make up for that slow down. Basically, you can make it as challenging as you are comfortable with. Want a no brainer run and not worry about the turns? Enter the 120mph class. Really want to stress out and push yourself, work your way up to the 155mph average class. Pucker factor? Build a car and go unlimited.....try averaging 170mph (or more) for 100 miles.

I like track driving as well, but track and ORR are totally different endeavors. The next time you hit 100+mph on the track for a few seconds, imagine never slowing down below 135mph for 100 miles. That's what George and I did last weekend, our top speed was 189mph.....well actually we only made it 65 miles, we blew the engine at 188mph.

But to answer the original question, if you want a similar type of experience, on regular roads, near the East Coast, check out the Targa Newfoundland. Of course "near" is realtive, so the Texas ORR may be closer to you. In any case, check into track DE(Drivers Ed) days...you will get hooked on that too!!!

Personally I think Open road racing is more costly than DE time and in some ways more dangerious. Most DE's you never see over 140 mph and even it is for a short time. Going 130 mph on a 2 lane road even if closed off seems more dangerious. The risk is mostly that going off the road could result in a hugh wreck. Most race tracks are better designed to contain the car even it is a wall. Plus it seems like it takes $500 to $600 to run one of thse open road events.

DE is a much better value and if you like it you can progress to racing. I did my first DE in Jan 1999 in a completly stock 88 944 Turbo S and by April 2002 was racing in a dedicated race car I built from an 944 I got for $1200. PCA is great place to start DE and NASA is another alternative. NASA events have both Driver Ed and racing at the same events (different run groups of course) so you can see both in action. NASA also has been developing a clear path for those who may like to one day become racers. They are also perfectly happy with those that just want to run DE.

Something much more zen like about linking turns around a track. IMO

Yeah and I'm not trying to end up in jail either. I'm gonna check out DE. I use to race CCS 600cc sportbikes at summit point all the time until I had a bad accident last year. Actually wasn't even on the track. I hit a deer going 60 on my bike. Now that I'm done with bikes (to many close calls) I'm looking to fill that track void. Just don't have the money to full on race cars. Thats why I was looking at open road racing. I'm glad you guys introduced me to DE. Looks like a great group and very informative on track training.

Ouch. Sounds much harder on the car than a DE.

You have just begun what will be a long and slippery slide. Well worth every penny IMO
