GT3 wrecked at autocross

I'm sorry - this is not a very funny event. But the photo does remind me of the old Road & Track magazine photo on the back page. Bob is standing next to the side of the road, looking at his car down in the ravine. Bob thought to himself "those were good tires, but not great tires."

I've seen a few disasters before, but this one is right up there. That picture really tells the story. Guy is probably thinking, OMG, there goes my retirement. Hopefully, he is well off. I remember seeing a guy show up at a Roebling DE in a nice new Z06. He stuck on a set of slicks and was really showboating it down the front straight, just flying. Coming out of 9, a few laps later he lost the rear end and put it dead into the wall hard. Complete annialation. Lucky he walked away from it. I remember he had that same look as that guy in the picture. A cross between "I can't believe how stupid that was" and "Oh Sh*t how am I gonna pay for this". Those that race know this kind of thing can happen anytime you hit the track, and you are mentally and likely financially prepared to handle it, but an Auto-X !!

Race Car
fwiw, a long time ago a Flagger parked his bmw behind the grandstands about 300 yds from the track on a straight, were nobody ever went off.... til that day...
a 2nd gen RX7 went off, never slowed and pretty much totaled the workers 5 series. then the racer packed up and left before anyone could find them... (and the worker didn't really have the means to replace it.)
makes you want to really look where you stand or park at a track...
(ie. paddock, at moroso front straight after S/F, on drivers left... nothing but chain link fencing... to stop a car..)
-my guess, is an automatic driver, with a borrowed stick, and brain fade...
good news is its nothing money can't fix...

Race Car
I think he found out who entered/drove the car, they were not local (scca) club members, and don't think the club or track helped pay for it... (waiver signed, and car was not in designated parking area)
it was an older pristine 80's (in late 90's), pretty sure he wrote it off...
(Bob Van Epps might rember the incident... local bmw/cca)
Anyway, point is careful what you think is safe... that autox could have been a lot worse...

I'd like to see the layout of the course, including the curbs, light poles, drains, stands and grid/parking. I'd also like to hear what the safety steward or course designer has to say about this.
