All, I am considering purchasing a Hot Lap timer. Has anyone had any experience with these? Are there any other brands I should be considering? Who is the best vendor to get these from? Thanks in advance.

Jim,
I have a Hot Lap timing setup with the extended range, so far no problems. The only problem I encounter is when someone else at the track has the same unit but not informing anyone, then I get erratic lap times. Puchased mine from
Longacre Racing, not sure of the web address.

intercomp also makes a laptimer, its a bit more streamlined looking than the hot-lap appears to have more features than the hotlap (pc compatibility) and is priced similarly to the hot lap......... check out pegasus they sell both units

The HotLap timer is a fairly common sight here in the Northeast, which may be a consideration (particularly if you're a transmitter-moocher like me). I've found readings to be somewhat erratic, even with the extended range transmitter (e.g., with the transmitter on the right side of the track, needing to drive down the middle of the track at start/finish at WGI in order to get a reading, instead of down the left side where you would normally already be tracked-out). Sunlight can also be a problem. However, I've been happy with the results, and (short of going to a Motec or Stack data system with its own beacon(s)), I can't imagine changing....
FWIW, Intercomp makes some good stuff, although I've never seen their lap timing system....

I'm with Howard. Mine has always worked well except when passing someone at the transmitter or there are two transmitters out there. We always mention this at the DE meeting before our runs to try and eliminate this problem. Some people place their transmitter on the passenger side to avoid this problem. Bought mine from Racer Wholesale.

Gentlemen, Thanks for all the responses. I ended up going with the intercomp since it has an RS232 output. I have a palm device that I plan on hooking up to it for data storage. Thanks for all the advice.
Cheers, James
