Post temporary paint on rock chip protector

A guy was using this in savannah last time I was there, and I forgot to take down the name of it. I wanted to try it as an option to my blue painters tape, but haven't been able to locate it.

Any special experiences with this stuff?
Thanks,
David

I have tried this stuff. It is a paint on latex. It was the biggest PITA to remove it. It was suppose to peel right off, and did in certain spots. But most spots I had to scrape it off. It did get a bit wet which could have caused this. But it was a very bad experience.

Silver T, did you get your from Phil's Automotive? I think the paint is manufactured in TX. I've tried it once, and I think that the trick is to apply it THICK. Multiple thin coats is not going to do it either. It needs to be one thick coat, preferably with the use of a roller. Isn't that right, Brian Keith Smith?

Or, you could simply never be behind anyone long enough to get a chip

I think i may not have put it on thick enough and when I used a roller it went EVERYWHERE. I have decided to deal with the stone chips as this is way to big of a PITA for me.

Chris, not fair when you have 100 extra horses on that car of yours. With 220 horses less, I'll have to heat your dust.

The guy I talked to had it on an M3, and he had it applied on the vertical parts of the nose--so I'd think that it wouldn't be too runny. He said he applied it w/ a roller. I remember it looking really thick--almost like spray on bedliner, but clear. He said his only problem was that when recently waxed, it didn't stay on as well. He didn't mention any problems w/ removal. I think I might have tracked him down, and am waiting for a response. I'll post what it is to compare it to silver's stuff that wasn't much good.

I've scoured around for a black version of the 3m painters tape, but camera tape is the only thing close, and it won't work. I've thought of black racers tape, but the residue left is a big pain to remove.

What about the good old fashioned vinyl bras? You could even sew in something to cover the headlights.

David, was it per chance "Lamin-X" as in Lamin-X Protective Films? There is a guy in C. Fla. that (from what I am told) is the guy to do this application. If you have any problems locating him/it, let me know and I'll put you in touch with the guys that run this in IT.

Arthur:

I normally put 2 coats on my hood, front fenders, and rear quarters, but I always apply a thin coat of wax prior to putting it on.

I normally haven't had problem getting it off. It does better in warm weather than in cold. Goes on and comes off easier. When it is cold, it doesn't always dry the right way, and can become "brittle" if it is too cold when you apply it.

This past weekend, Chris showed me how a roll of something like drawer liner that he got from Walmart protected his car at CMP. It had a very light adhesive on it, looked like wax paper, and held on despite 145 MPH. Who cares how you look when you're going that fast? It is all a blur....

Arthur, do you instruct/work/? at CMP? I'll be there this Friday for a lapping day, if there is no rain that is. My slicks tend not to stick very well when wet.

The material you seek can be obtained from GROCO Specialty Coatings in Dallas TX. Their number is 972-286-7890. The product is called Transseal protective peelable 2000 clear. I bought a gallon of it from them. Have only used it once and found it a pain to remove. The parts I put on real thick removed easily but there were edges where it was not as thick and it was harder to remove. I now just use a bra and lots of racers tape to cover the wheel wells and other parts on the front nose that are exposed and not covered with the bra. Hope this helps. I can't remember how much I paid for this stuff but don't think it was much. Lady I talked to on the phone to place the order was a little concerned that I be sure to test it on the car before putting too much on. They are used to dealing with the auto manufacturers and not individuals.
