What is the structural purpose of a knee bar? Is it to keep the a-pillar bars from buckling?

hm, interesting figures. i guess it really is a moot point. a difference of 7 pounds of weight or 1/4" of head room is relatively insignificant.

Unless you're struggling to remove weight or gain headroom.

But, you are correct that we usually end up with other things in the car that we can remove to lose weight. Still, anytime you can keep the base weight down, the better off you are because it allows you to add other things or redistribute weight.

I had originally planned on using 1.75 x 0.095 but my partner ordered the 1.5" die for the tubing bender. In the end, I really appreciated the 0.75" tight bend radius with the 1.5" tubing.

Any problem with using a combination of 1.75 and 1.5? For instance, seems like the knee bar would be a good place to use 1.5.

i have a dash bar instead of a knee bar. my understanding is that it provides protection from a side impact load, transferring the load across the cage instead of allowing the side to buckle in. they both work the same as far as load transfer, just that the bar is behind the dash in my car, reducing the risk of hitting my knees on the bar

Don't forget that you could always route the dash bar over the dash. I elected to run mine through the dash.

JoeMag - thanks for all the links, yeah they'll keep me busy for a while

Geo - I think with the bottom edge of the dash removed the knee bar should not be any more intrusive than the bottom edge of the dash before removal.

I'd never consider running a "knee-capper."

Default look at all the bodies in white

Porsche still seems to have confidence in X bracing... though we only see one side of the car in this pic

I own a 996RS that was run at LeMans.. and Daytona it has a hybrid drivers side roll-cage... a nascar "hoop" was added when the car was run at Daytona

Could you or someone else list the pros and cons?

You could hit your knee or leg on it, but you could hit your knee or leg on the bottom edge of the dash too.

What did/does the factory do on the cup cars - knee bar or none?

Just got my quote from Fall Line. Don't want to discourage those who value an absolute perfect and beautiful cage but..... $7,900???? No it's not titanium, I asked.

Ouch. I was quoted less than 1/4 of that amount. But mine will be a simple 6 point with no suspension attachments.

I paid $2500 for mine including the steel. Custom dead pedal, dash mounts, cutoff switch mount, and seatback brace.

The welding is not that difficult if you find someone who knows how to weld correctly, and the steel cost is the same. Just use a well designed cage that fits within the rules. At $7900 I would suspect you are paying for a significant amount of shop overhead, insurance, etc.
