Eurovan towing
Has anyone ever towed a 911 with a VW eurovan? I have a '96 993 and a 2000 VW Eurovan, If I put a class three hitch on does anyone know if this setup will work well. I assume I'd need a lightweight trailer.

Burning Brakes
John Cramer tows his 911 racecar with a lightweight trailer with his Eurovan. It's a nice setup. I do recall him mentioning dropping down to 25 mph on a few hills but you'd be better off hearing his experiences directly. I'll alert him to this thread.

The eurovan weighs about 4500? lbs. I think a stock 993 weighs about 3500 lbs? Acccording to the Eurovan manual the max weight of both (Van and trailer) is 10,000. Any comments?

Your 2000 EV has 160 HP, right, from the 2-valve VR6? My 2001 has 201 HP and 181 ft/lb Torque, so my experience isn't directly comparable, but here goes: I have a 2001 Eurovan GLS with a class III hitch from Dalan
<a href="http://www.hitch-web.com/vhitch.asp?Veh_Type=Truck&VehNo=24642&Class=CL3&bumper=None#t_one" target="_blank">http://www.hitch-web.com/vhitch.asp?Veh_Type=Truck&VehNo=24642&Class=CL3&bumper=None#t_one</a>
With all Class IV hardware (drawbar with 4" lift) and 2" ball.
Trailer is a 715 pound Trailex 7031, not cheap but extremely well engineered and a dream to use.
My car weighs 2294 and I carry two spare tires (one for van, one for trailer) and four rain tires on the tire rack, so I estimate the all-up weight at about 3400 pounds. The van is rated for 2000 Kg or 4400 pounds, but check your owner's manual to verify.
My experience is AWESOME. The 2001 pulls strongly into traffic, there is NO sway, handling and backing is excellent and I cruise at 80 MPH. Don't know exact fuel mileage yet but I estimate in the 16-20 range while towing.
I did a bunch of due diligence on the package and spoke to owners of 2000's- who said that the setup worked great- and to some who had the older EV with the Audi 5-cyl motor- who also said that it worked great. The only negative commments I got were people speculating who had never actually done it.
The 25 mph segment that JC referred to was when I was towing up an approximate 4% grade at the highest elevation in New Jersey- she slowed to 25 mph pulling the grade but made it and the temp needle never even came off 190.
Good Luck!

Sorry for the duplicate reply, my first post to the forums section. To echo and elaborate a bit: I have a 2000 eurovan MV and have been towing a 911SC (2600lbs) with a Trailex for two years. I use the DaLan class III hitch, with surge brakes on both axles of the trailer. If I had to do it again, I'd get electric brakes. My biggest complaint is not power but braking. If you look at the 2001 EVs, they have much bigger brakes under 16" wheels. I've had scary fade descending into Watkins Glen from the track. Not terminal or ultimately dangerous, just spooky. The braked trailer rating for the EV is 4500lbs so with an 850lb trailex, 2600lb car, 200lbs of tools in the box and 4-8 tires in the rack I assume I'm under the limit. In general, I LOVE this setup. The EV is a fantastic family hauler around town, you can sleep in it in a pinch, it gets good mileage etc. That said, I am trading in my '00 this week for a '02 to get the added HP and bigger brakes. (the spec sheet also mentions a self leveling suspension which would be great; there is a fair amount of sag in my '00 which I'd thought to remedy with air booster springs) However, this is an adequate tow vehicle. It is even ok in the mountains (I'm in NJ, cross the Alleghanys enroute to Mid OH eg) if you keep your speed up.
Good luck,
Brandon
