Trailer tiedown points on 993?
I have been using axle straps through the front wheels, but because the car has a front splitter, the ratchet strap clip is rubbing the splitter's side lips.
I would prefer to clip directly to the undercarriage, not the wheel, so that there is a clear line from the attchment point to the trailer D-ring.
Suggests? Thanks

Rick, the autometrics tiedowns only fit the back of our 993's. For the front, Autometrics recommends fitting shackles (of a substantial diameter) through the holes in the frame near the firewall. However, in my closed trailex, I can't easily get to the passenger side to hook the tiedown to the shackle. On the driver's side, I tie down to the shackle. On the passenger side, I tie down to the car's front tow hook, since it's on the passenger side.

Hi Marc
Thanks for the additional insight about Autometrics; are you sure about not having a front end solution (except for shackles)? Their installation instructions are for both front and rear.
I will check in with them, and psot if there is something new or different.
Thanks again

My bad - a closer look at the site and installation instructions confirms that a pair of shackles is used for the front tie downs.
Not sure I like that solution; are the shackles banging around under the car? I would think so.
I'll talk with Adam and get his thoughts.
Thanks again.

Rick,
I have the Autometrics set up and it works fine. The shackles don't make any noise, but I don't see why you couldn't just use the existing tie-down loops in the frame. The rear tie-downs, however, make fastening the car quick and easy.
Do you have a busy track season lined up for this year?

Hi Mark
You know, with your knowledge of these cars, I almost came straight to you with this question.
I just crawled under the car and was thinking the same thing about the front end - why not just clip on to the existing loops (which I of course never looked at before) but I can see how the shackles might be easier to get at.
Yes - much track time if I am lucky - trying for a lot of advanced driver only days (like Kojote and of course Hudson Valley PCA) and some regular PCA DE days to hone my instructing skills.
We (North East region) have a really nice 3 day event at Mt. Tremblant (Blues Festival same time!) then a lay day then 3 more days at Calabogie; we are going to do that one no matter what. You should come.
And you?

Hey Rick,
We'll see how the year starts out, my wife just quit her job and is going to nursing school so she can buy me a cup car. I just switched brokers and am taking my business to another level. I want to do at least five events, including club races (WG, Summit, Mosport, maybe?), this year. I hope to run with you soon!

Hi Rick---yup, Autometrics says use the shackles. As Mark said, they don't make any noise and I haven't noticed any damage to the frame rails, and they definitely make it easier to reach under the car when you're rushing to get home after a hot sweaty weekend at the Glen.
Thinking out loud, I should probably make sure they're still tight!
Marc

Thanks, guys - see you at the track; I have ordered the front and rear set.
Yes, Marc - check those shackles (like I should have checked my trailer lug nuts...)

Are the factory tie down points the round metal area at the jack points. Is this where you can loop a fabric strap through to hold it down. This is how the flat-bed truck held mine down, but they were using the big hooks to hold on. Also, I though some guy sued a shipper for using the jack point area to hold his car down. They looped chain through it and bent the hell out of it.
I also have the autometrics loops for the rear, but they do not work well with a stock suspension. There is way too much droop in mine and they seem to get in the way. It's probably not bad when the car is down, but metal to aluminum, I didn't want to chance it.
