AutoX practice course
I would like to practice autoX-ing before make a fool of myself in front of crowds of people .. anyway, I was wondering if there's a certain spec required to set up a practice course.. specific turn angles, lengths of straights, etc etc?
Also if anyone knows of any secluded parking lots/paved open spaces in south jersey let me know

I understand your wanting to practice.
First, its not really necessary. At least
in the context of setting up your own course, et al. Get Hank Watts' book. You can get all
the practice you need by increasing your
precision and awareness on the street. Fear
not. You will almost certainly not be the
first timer there. First timers are always welcome. You would *really* have to try to make a fool of yourself.
Second, setting up an unsanctioned course is
,IMO, bad form. Besides being uncontrolled, etc
it sends the wrong message. I find/negotiate
new sites for the local PCA, and prevailing
over the previous actions of other clubs/individuals is the hardest part.
If you have concerns/questions, please feel
to contact me directly.
Bottom line, just get out there and do it!
Its great fun.

I have done my first 2 AutoX in the past monoth or so. I think the value of seeing others drive and havign the chance to discuss with others far outweighs any "embrassment" factor. My car was dubbed the "bug bomb" due to the leaky valve guides but the support and help was there nonetheless.
One guy suggested that I ractice learning where my tires were by yusing the highway when i drive to work. When the road is empty, try to change lanes and not hit the reflectors that define the lanes. Try to get as close as possible as well.
Most of all, have fun.

All good answeres above. You'll notice they mention WHERE to put your car and not how fast to be. Go slow at first and concentrate on placing your car accurately. Watch the fast guys and where they place their cars throughout the course. Don't look upon that as gospel though. I was in a club where even the perennial FTD driver took bad lines through some corners.

Schlag...I just started this year, you got some great advice.
There's a bunch of Rennlisters that attend NNJR autox's...
Usually the week off a NNJR autox there will be a post on the 924/944 board...so you'll get a chance to see who will be there and then meet them the day of the event.
And then you'll probably be addicted so we'll see a lot of you...hehe

Remember nearly anything you do (short of putting the car on its roof) will be something nearly everyone there has already done (althogh they may not wish to admit it!) Smooth is or leads to speed, noisy usually does not.
