Blowed up Old Blue
Many have waited for it's demise. Some jealous some fearful.
Most knowing that all good things must come to an end.....
At the SuperSolo event last weekend Old Blue bit the dust.
I have been driving the living **** out of this car for a decade or so.....on a budget that would **** off most if they knew it.
Dear friends (like Terry) who should remain unmentioned watched as year after year Old Blue devoured track mile after track mile and never protested.
Over the course of a decade I replaced the head studs once, put in a clutch in 2002, and changed the oil before every event, and not much else.
Once a year I would go for it and do my "annual" which included a valve adjustment.
Well, 28 years and nothing but hard track driving for the last few years finally caught up with Old Blue.
Heading into T6 at Homestead something gave up. Smoke, flames, and a tow truck were next.
Turns out I spun a bearing and banged something else judging by the 1/4 inch chunks of aluminium in the oil screen.
I just wanted to say thanks to all who have expressed their symphathy in my time of trouble.
And to say..
YOU'RE MY BOY BLUE!!

Sorry to hear the bad news. That car has been a fixture at more track events than I can remember. For some reason, it's the back end of the car that I remember best. So, is it a rebuild or RIP? If the latter, think of how much fun it'll be to spend time checking out a bunch of 911's to find Old Blue's successor!

Dan;
I'm with ya brother. My old beast has somewhere North of 150k miles on the clock. I've never had it open for anything, not the head, not the pan... nothing. It just keeps running its little heart out, seeming to love it as much as ever. I keep watching the oil pressure. I'm hoping it will tail off gradually so I can stop it in time.
I'm really torn between seeing just how far the ornery little bugger will go, or just dropping in a fresh engine now. It'll hurt me if my old friend grenades, but I also feel like I might cheat it of its glory to stop it short.
I'm with ya.

Thanks guys
John: I know what you mean, Blue never needed a quart of oil between changes, dripped a bit but no burn.......guess that's why the bottom went before the top end!
Best guess is 194K on the chassis but no way to know for sure what was on the motor (it was a transplant long before I got it).

Still checking out the options, my buddy Brian has a 3.2 short stroke available that Lyn Howe built for him. I know the motor and it is sweet.
Also it will bolt right up. Definitely an option.
Rebuilding the 3.0 is still in there but it would certainly exceed the dollar value of the car......
GT3, hum..... honey can I have a GT3??..........
Hang on she isn't answering that option yet.....

Yes, I am bummed too. Yes, I hate to see that happen to a good friend.....but more importantly, YES, I will hate to see the rebuilt BLUE suck me off the track when Dan-the-Man decides to rebuild/modify.
Dan, I think NOW is the time to start thinking about Club Racing. Build a car that conforms to certain rules and have a blast. "All good things must come to an end but all bad things are an experience waiting to be learned from"
BTW, if you need to get behind the wheel at Moroso, Henrietta's door will always be open for you. Just hop in and have a good time!

Damn that sucks Dan. I have to admit I've admired how trusty that old blue has been.
Get a used 993 motor ($6-7k) and shoehorn that in there, you'll be kicking even more butt than what you've been doing before. Although GT3 ain't a bad option (at all!) either.

Santa? Santa can you hear me??
I have been a very good boy.......OK better than before.......thats good right.
I have a very interesting list.........all I want is any one off my list..........not all of them!!
Let's see in no particular order...
A GT3 (thanks guys for putting that out there)
A 3.6 (so I can keep up with Petu)
A 3.4, some coilovers, Sways, and Big Reds so I can mix it up with Rich at Daytona
A Short stroke 3.2 so it will still look like a 3.0 and i can keep my bumper sticker idea
IT MAY LOOK LIKE A POSER BUT LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING
Thanks Santa can you let me know real soon I kinda gotta know which events to sign up for!
Your friend
Dan (a very good boy)
