82SC Track wheel question?
I understand most track SC's are running 8's and 9's or 7's and 9's. Can anyone with experience with this vintage car share their thoughts on the preferred set up? Looking at tires available it looks like there are more options in 17 vs. 16 again any input is welcome. The application is pure track/race stock class rolled fenders. Thanks in advance for your input.

I've got ccw 18 x 8's and 9's with Toyo RA1's 245 up front and 275 rear in the mail. First day with them will be end of this week. A lot of guys run this setup on SC's in my area.

I just went through this so I'm happy to help. For PCA club racing the most popular sizes seem to be as follows (assuming Hoosier R6 tires):
8x15, 9x15 - run the Fuchs with 225-50-15, 245-50-15. Cheap and light, but really tall sidewalls and limited to 245 width in the rear. This gives you a 24.4" diameter rear tire that can be a big advantage in terms of thrust and helps a little with gearing, but you will be down on contact patch in the corners w.r.t. the 17" and 18" options below. This is easy to fit don't even need to roll fenders. Need to adjust front ride height for the very small diameter front tires. Rear tires are cheapest of all the options - $201 each, weight 19 lbs..
8x16, 9x16, with 225-50-16 front, 245-45-16 rear. Same diameter rear tire as above (24.4"), but a shorter sidewall. The old BBS 3-piece wheels are popular for this application and very light. Roll front fender lips. Rear tires are $208 each and weigh 22 lbs.
8x17, 9x17, with 225-45-17 front, 245-40-17 rear. This gives you a 24.5" diameter rear which is similar to the above options but you have a shorter sidewall and can run the option below as well. More unsprung weight than the 15" and 16" setups. Fitment is basically the same as the above - roll front fenders. Rear tires go for $225 each and weight 22 lbs.
8x17, 9x17 with 245-40-17 front, 275-40-17 rear. This gives you a 25.2" diameter rear tire, which is unfortunate since you lose thrust and its makes our SC gears even taller than they already are. Roll or shave front fenders, may need to relocate right rear oil line. Rears go for $250 each and weigh 23 lbs.
8x18, 9x18 with 245-35-18 front, 285-30-18 rear. This gives you a 24.6" rear diameter in a nice wide tire. Best of both worlds, although more unsprung weight than any of the other options. Shave front fender, relocate right rear oil line, pull rear fenders. Those rear tires weigh 24 lbs and are running $285 each!
Right now I have a set of Fikses in 8x17, 9x17 and a set of BBS 3-piece in 8x16, 9x16. If I were looking to get new wheels and I had an unlimited budget for wheels/tires, I'd consider the 8x18 and 9x18.

I was not considering 18's. I thought the weight might be prohibitive. The tire selection is definitely good though. Are there any cast wheels that have the right offset or do I need go with 3pc wheels?

Excellent quality track wheel and quite light. Weight is relative of course, my CCW 18" wheels with Hoosiers are a LOT lighter than the 16" wheels/tires that came with the car.. Never weighed them but swapped them enough to know that for sure. There are other advantages to a lower profile tire on the track also, another reason my race shop specs 18" on cars they build.

As I mentioned, the BBS wheels are very popular in both 15" and 16" sizes. So are the Fuchs - if you can find a good set of 8x16 944 offset fronts and 9x16 rears that is a very light setup.
In 17" and 18" wheels I am not aware of any options for forged 1-piece wheels with the proper offsets and bolt patterns for the SC/Carrera but they may exist. Most people go with Fikse, Kinesis, Forgeline or CCW in those sizes, which are all 3-piece wheels.
Another option is Kodiak: http://www.kodiakracingwheels.com/index.html

Offsets: My Fikses are as follows:
8x17 front +31.3 mm offset
9x17 rear +18.6 mm offset
If you do order Fikses, just call them up. They know what you need. If you order something else you should talk with people who have that brand. With Fikse, you can't just get any offset, but rather they have a set of offsets that are available in each wheel size. I imagine that other wheel manufacturers may have something similar going on.

You can keep the Fuchs appearance and centers by going with Lindsey wheels. They only make 17 inch wheels fromt the centers of Fuchs.
