Default Hankook DOT Track Tire

Anyone have any feedback on the Hankook DOT track tire?

I'm looking for an alternative to the Toyo RA-1 since it has become difficult to find in the size I need. I've tried MPSC's in the past and found them difficult to tune.

Thoughts?

what about the NITTO NT01 instead of toyo? discount tire sells them. I've heard some positive things about them in comparison to the rA1s

I have not testet the Hankook tires yet. However, I have heard mixed reviews. For the money they might be a good option if you are on a budget. If that is the case try the Kumho V710. We spent 6 hours testing different track tires a a year ago @ PIR. (Our tire of choice in the past was the Hoosier R3S03.)

Hoosier R3S03 and A3S03
Michelin Pilot Sport Cup
Kumho Ecsta V710
Kumho VictoRacer V700

By far the best tire in the group was the Kumho Ecsta V710. It was far superior in feel, bite, responsiveness, and getting the power down. Not ta mention they knocked almost 1.25 sec off of our lap times versus Hoosiers (the A3S03 and autocross tire could not even come close). 1.25sec is a lot on a 1:24 lap time The Michelin felt ok but could not compare to either the Hoosiers or Kumhos.

Kumho has done a great job developing these tires. (night and day differnce from the Victoracer) Hopefully, Kumho will have more sizes available soon. I would love to run these on my street car since they are DOT legal. Give'em a try. You will not be disappointed.

I have heard great things about the Nittos. They are only in limited sizes so far, but that will change soon, from what I hear.

Only downside to the Kumho 710's is tha, after about 30 minutes of hard racing, they really go away. But for short-duration stuff, they are very nice.

I assume you kept the same alignment settings betwen runs? Or did you change to the manufacturers recommend camber, etc..?

I'll be trying V710's for the first time after running Hoosiers for years and am hoping they'll be close in time and last a few sessions longer. They're costing me about $250 a weekend and if I can get one more weekend out of the 710's it's like making money, haha

I will be trying the hankook z214 tires on my 951 at mid-ohio this weekend. I had been running toyo's this season, but I wanted to find a tire that wears a little "better" than a hoosier but is "faster" than the toyo...A few people I met this season have started to run them with excellent results...

Frisby Race Tire in Gurnee was promoting them quite a bit last year. Good source for Hankook, Toyo, and Hoosier... they have 'em all. Much SCCA support.

Good stuff.

Seems like most have not had real personal experience with the Hankook's.

I have a buddy with a 951 in GT3S running the Nitto's and says that he really likes them. I too am looking for something faster than the Toyo, but longer lasting than the Hoosier.

Hopefully we can get some more feedback on this thread about the Hankook's.

For folks in the New York, NJ, Conn area, Phil's Tire Service in Haverstraw, New York carries the Hankook tires. Phil provides at-the-track service for the NASA 944Cup races (Northeast and Mid-Atlantic events), which is how I met him.

Phil's also carries Hoosier, Toyo and Kumho (and most other brands). Phil and his wife are just real good people. Give 'em a try.

The Tire Shoppe in Pennsylvania is a very good source. Great service, great shaving, and highly competitive prices. Ask for Joe.

Are the Nitto's really faster than the Toyo? I had heard they are the same compound as the RA-1, just a different tread.

I've used a couple sets of the Hankook Z211 C50 compound in USTCC. They are indeed faster than RA1's but I much prefer the Toyo. The Z211 don't live long and must be shaved for dry use. I got about 3.5 heat cycles out of them before they lost most of their stick (and it doesn't come back). There is still plenty of rubber left but they cook off the good stuff pretty quick. Other USTCC competitors told me they also get about 4 heat cycles of use out of them too. After the first couple heat cycles the RA1's will be faster. I've never tried the Z214.

Eric
