Default KUMHO 710 GOOD OR BAD?

I am currently using the new Hoosier R-6 on the West Coast. Yea....Dude
where the tracks are hot and fast! We are currently running a two race
format and with a new set for the weekend I am having great results on
Saturday....but on Sunday the tire have gone away 5-7 laps of a 14 lap race.
Hoosier says the tire should be broken-in atleast a few days before they
are used. I don't have the time or budget to buy an extra set of wheels (3)
or take a day off work to go to the track to break them in.
How are the KUHMO 710? Any problems?

hoosier recommends scrubbing in and heat cycling then letting them rest for at least 24 hours to "cure" i think you can effectively do this, without another set of wheels, by heat cycling them at the tire rack then just scrubbing them at the track to get the pol release off.

here's a recent thread on kumho v710 and another THREAD

My last set of Hoosier R-6, I broke the in for 1 session on a Friday-took them
off-put them in the trailer, used them to qualify 1 session on (Saturday), then a 14 lap race (Saturday), Sunday they went off after 5-7 laps. Track tempature was over 105 degree's. I talked to the top two guys in my class and they had same problems. Hoosier wanted to see a few days after breaking them in, for the best results. This would mean a third set of wheels, one set to break in
on Saturday or Sunday and put away for the next event. Second set are
the current set, which gave up the ghost during my last race. This set will
be my practice set and will do just fine at long as I do about 5 lap of practice
on each session. The third set would be a new set of R-6 that I took off work
and went to the track and broke them in. Now I am ready to go!
If the KUHMO 710 does not need to be broken in and will last for both
20 lap race in one weekend.....I am ready to change!

Big Question------ Will the KUHMO 710 be just as fast on Sunday's 14 lap
race as they were on Saturday's 14 lap race?

I will practice on Used tires and only use the New KUMHO's to qualify and
race each day!

Do they blister or de-laminate?

I have both Hoosiers and Kuhmos. I got a 13/13 in qualifying, and did not get to race. But, I ran one session on the Hoosiers and 3 sessions on the Kuhmos. I was saving the Hoosiers for the race on Sunday, which I did not get to do.

The Hoosiers feel stickier to me, but the lap times are similar. The Hoosiers are 225-45-15's and the Kuhmos are 215-40-16's. The Hoosiers are about 1/2 inch wider, but the same diameter. I was still learning the track (Putnam) so I am not sure it was a fair test.

I wish they were the same size, but that is impossible for the car I use, and having a set of 15's and a set of 16's. I went out on the Hoosiers first, and it took 2 sessions before I beat the Hoosier times with the Kuhmos. If I could have finished the weekend the results may have been different, but who knows. But I feel both are good tires.

Thanks Bill,

The top drivers got together all aggreed that we have the same problem.
We really don't care if the KUHMO 710 is a little slower, we just want
to race the 2 races and worry about putting the car in the fence.
I just need to find out if the KUHMO 710 will give me 2-3 races.
How many heat cyces do you think I would get?
3 Races would be one to break them in and two more (qualify + race)
per race, which would be 7 heat cycles. I have been told to expect
10-15 heat cycle before thay cord.

What do you think?

You have to heat cycle any tire. The initial heating and cooling cycle actually changes the molecular bonding. Any tire manufacturer will tell you this. You may find some tires are better at coming in quicker, but it's only temporary.

I bought the Kuhmos in May, and ran the first heat cycle at Memphis over Memorial Day Weekend. They seemed fine, toward the end of the session a valve stem let the tire down, and it came apart on the Front Straight. Tire litterely cut itself in thirds. Obviously I wasn't going to make turn one so I went straight off into the gravel. Other than bending my oil cooler, all that was wrong was pulling 3 zillion pieces of gravel out of the car.

July, went to Putnam, bought a set of 225-45-15 Hoosiers. Ran one heat cycle. Went back to the Kuhmos, and ran three sessions. Last one only 2 laps, when they 13/13ed me and sent me home. So my guess is 3 heat cycles. The tires look great, and they felt good too. I am storing both sets ion a cool dry place. (Relatively)

I am going to try to make the Nashville Superspeedway race in Sept, but Daytona, PCA in Oct is most likely. I will let you know then.

Tire Rack will "heat cycle" the V-710's before shipping @ $ 15.00/tire.

I ordered a set of V-710's... 315/18" and had them cycled @ TireRack before delivery.

Got them 3 weeks before going to the track. Mounted them upon receipt and stored them in our warehouse.

So far... I have 3 days @ Road Atlanta ( 9 cycles ) plus 2 days at Barber ( 6 cycles). I haven't seen any degrading yet. I do rotate them each day.

The V-710's are "Stickier" than the Hoo Hoo's I've been using... but I haven't tried Hoosier's new R-6's.
