Default trailer maintenance question

How often or after how many miles do you repack your trailer's bearings?
Or to say it differently, should I be doing it annually or more often?.
(enclosed trailex, maybe 8k mi annually, mostly on the interstate, sometimes on the long island expressway and cross bronx expressway--ugh)
Thanks.

Hey;

Of course it would not hurt to look at them every year, but that is probably overkill. Most people never look at the bearings on their cars, so what's with the trailer? Every 3-4 years is probably fine... or what ever makes you comfortable, really.

My Trailex dealer (also my track set-up shop) likes about 3-4 years and around 15-20k miles, which is what I do. That is probably preventive insurance. Most "you must pack trailer bearings every year" stories come from boat trailer guys who like to dip theirs in cold water/salt water.

I do my 20' Cargopro enclosed aluminum every year.
Not that expensive and good PM and a chance to check the brakes at the same time.

I'm not sure if it's repacking them, but my hubs have a grease nipple on them. I just grease them up once or twice a year until I see the old grease coming out.

I service my trailer every year. Not expensive and the thought of an issue is not pleasant, especially on a Sunday night on the way home from Canada.

I'm with you on this one. Too much downside not to do it.

The brake check needs to be done annually IMO. Of course your mileage may vary, but out here with the mountains no matter how careful I am the brakes and bearings can take a beating.

I've got a buddy that keeps a spare hub, bearing, drum, and shoes for his trailer with him when he goes to the track. He had one fail one time and was stranded. He never leaves home w/o out it now.

I've entertained the same idea.

No you're not repacking them. Bearing buddies that replace regular dust caps grease only the outer bearing - not the inner. EZ Lube hubs grease both. The problem with doing it the way you have mentioned is that there is a great risk of blowing out the seal and leaking grease all over your brakes and then being left with no seal to keep the grease where it belongs.

As for maintenance, this is Dexter Axle's suggested maintenance regime. . . http://www.primotrailersales.com/ima...20Schedule.pdf

What I have doesn't replace the dust cap, but when I lube it, I can see it squeeze past on the outer portion of the bearing (I think. LOL).

This is a true EZ Lube hub.

Taking everything out for a repack is still the preferred method. You just don't know what crap is in the grease or what condition your bearings are in.
