Hi Chris,

The factory Cup pump uses just the connections you mentioned. Power, ground and terminal 61 ...that is from the alternater so it knows when the engine is running and turns on the pump. The only place to get the pump with those connections is thru PMNA. I searched for quite a while and found (what looked like) the exact pump from a rebuilder in England. Very reasonably priced including the shipping. Original fitment on the 03 Volks Polo, But when it got here it had 20 or so electrical connections.....it was used in variable assist modes for different speeds and parking. I could not make it work just straight like the Cup pump...

Is that the ones you were refering to Chris??

I've got the MR2 pump on the Cup car, we just run it off a circuit breaker. If I forget to turn it on, well, it only takes one corner and I'm flicking the breaker. It's a good solution and bullet proof.

I visited Arlan Motorsports on Monday and had a nice chat with Dave and Ray re the electric pump. they confirmed it was a PMNA part and thought that at most I would have to add a relay, but no ECU connection is necessary. I'm going ahead with this conversion and I'll document it with pics.

Found out that the kit, which includes hoses, fittings, wiring, connectors and pump is ~$2k.

I know a few years ago guys that were running VW Golfs in pro rally were using the pump from a Subaru XT. They probably ran it all the time though. If you drive your Boxster on the street you'd maybe want to only have the pump run when you are turning the steering wheel.

What you need to develop is a PWM controller to contrl a simple 12v pump like the PMNA one. The PWM controller would take input from wheel speed and steering angle and provide output to the pump with varying voltage from 2-12v based on the requirement. The inputs can come from a varitey of sources including a MoTeC or AIM dash unit.

Wow, this stuff is way too expensive for me. I'm going to get some Pyrotech heat shielding today (sleeve and tape) and see if that helps. I'm sure it's not as good as a whole new line re-route and cooling system, but might be enough to keep me from having to replace my power steering every time I go to the track in the summer.

The pyrotape will set me back about $20, and if it works, great, as then I don't have to explain anything to my service department when I go back for warranty work on the car and have a re-routed power steering line, as whatever warranty work I would need done after that would be voided because I re-routed it.

Hmmm the pyrotape will not prevent the plastic PS fittings on the motor from melting. The PS cooler should not void the wty, in fact why not have the dealership, or a dealership do the work. They can get the PN's etc...from Boardwalk Porsche who has donethe mod before....

Oh yes, now would be a good time to mention that when the plastic fittings fail the Boxster regularly pukes fluid all over the top of the engine resulting in a nasty fire...kind of a bummer if You dont have a extinguisher handy or a quick corner crew.

Oh Glen, what do you know!

This reminds me of a saying. Can't put my finger on it. Something involving a horse & water

Don't forget that the Pentosin fluid is supposed to be really bad on other hoses.
