Default NASA Roll cage inspection/C2 Cup Car cage

i have been told by NASA that i have to drill 3/16" holes in all "critical" roll cage tubing for inspection purposes...should i worry about compromising the originality of the car or should i just drill the holes and move on. to me, it is not a big deal, i am just wondering if others have faced the same issue and what they have decided to do in this instance. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Drill the holes or don't race the car. Not too many options here.

So showing the cage specs from the car's manual isn't good enough for them?

I don't think its a big deal, the roofs are drilled all the time for radios.

I wouldn't drill a bunch of holes in a rare car like that. You have the factory documentation which shows the tubing specs. Also, on the earlier 964 cups, the Matter cage was alum (I am pretty sure the 91s and earlier were alum and the 92s and later were steel).

I would get a PCA logbook first and then use it to get a NASA. PCA won't make you drill holes in a factory cup's cage.

Yeah, its a rare car, but if you're willing to smash it up racing I don't see how some holes are going to bother you. But yes I agree that the drilling is unnecessary in the first place.

If anyone has them, John Colasante (JC in NY) will, send him a PM.

An aluminum cage won't meet NASA GCR spec's.

A Cup car has a steel cage. Further, you can always weld the holes up when you sell the car.

I don't understand why any group would want to drill and measure. Ultra sound gauges are a much better choice. Harder to cheat when using UT.

At last years PCA race at the Glen the guy checking my car drilled a small hole in my DAS sport roll bar to check thickness.

I suggest that you put the drill away for a little bit, unless you are at the track and the tech inspector is telling you to drill holes. This way you can ask him where he wants the holes.

To get the NASA log book for my car in February, the inspector drilled the whole himself and took the measurement. As fas as I saw, the same procedure was followed for all cars.
