Default New Mid-Ohio and Durometers

The newly paved Mid-Ohio track will only allow DOT tires with compound hardness of 50 or higher. It's NOT the treadwear rating imprinted on the tire, but is measured with a durometer. Anyone know if Michelin Pilot Sport Cups fall in the accepted category?

I haven't put a durometer to the MPSCs, but I would think that they would be OK based on having used them and other tires < 50. The safest bet is to buy a durometer and find out. It will be useful for testing the real "life" of your tires in the future.

How long will this restriction be in place? For those going to the PCA CR in May who could run them, will they allow slicks?

That is so amazingly, breathtakingly stupid.

This serves as a reminder to us all of why the world is the way it is.

Thanks for the replies. I think they are just giving more time for the pavement to cure. They certainly can't have the restriction indefinitely if they plan to run races.

OK, since no one here seems to know if Pilot Sport Cups will pass the test, where does one get a Durometer?

I heard all DOT tires are OK including Hoosiers. So MPSC should definately be good.

One of our club members tested RA1's, Hoosiers and Pilot Sports. They were all above the limit.

As to breathtakingly stupid, I'm sure it is the breakup issue. Putnam Park just completed a repave once and ran shortly after. The track was a mess after the club race. Wish I had a windshield replacemt service after that one.

No joking here. Bob K. sells durometers and they are useful for serious racing.

Didn't Barber need to be repaved shortly after opening (one year?) due to a lack of proper curing time?

Charlie, et al;
Per TrusSports, track owner and manger, tire restrictions are in place for the first weeks of April only, as the new surface cures. The PCA Club Race and D.E. in May has NO tire restrictions.
Chris- you can un-wad your shorts now, OK?
If anyone has concerns - please check direcly with the Chair of the event in question. Internet rumors can be quite confusing.

Didn't mean to cause confusion, Alan. Thing is, the event chair for one of the upcoming events just sent everyone a memo regarding the compound hardness. My post in the beginning pretty much is a quote of the memo. I just wanted to make sure MPSC's, my only track suitable set of tires for now, will pass.

To clarify, the restriction is temporary to give more curing time. Open to all tires by May. MPSC's, among other tires that can be seen by following the above link by bgiere, are acceptable during the brief restricted period.

Sorry of I caused any confusion. This thread is now closed.
