I just received my hard wired transponder and I need some help.
Where do you suggest I mount it?
What wire should I access to get power to the unit?
Thanks,
Mike

Mine is in the left front wheel well (I forget which race group requires it there) and has a wire that goes into the trunk (drilled a hole just below the brake fluid res). It's cable tied into place. Power comes from a fused line to the battery and a switch installed on the dash. I'll be redoing it shortly to use power from the old radio power to go to the switch and the out to the transponder.

Mike, you should also check the GGR of the series that you will run. They may specify the location of the transponder. Otherwise, LF wheel well for me.

Hey;
In most cars I build, I create an auxilliary power station somewhere in the cabin - wired and fused directly off the battery - for all the accessories. I like to keep them out of nasty, dirty wheelwells if I can. All kinds of stuff flying around in there, eh? On the 944s I put it on the leading edge of the front wheel well skirt, pointing down toward the track, switched to the dash.
On a 911 (which I have not done), I would put it on the left side, closer to the battery, but away from the wheel (if allowed). Imagine how disgusted you'd be to lose a race or a pole because some chunk of track flotsum wasted your transponder?

Tom W, why do you have a switch on it? I don't want something that can be turned off. My 944 has it on the frame rail just below the Air Cleaner, hard wired to the battery, with a fuse block on the hot wire. It has a clear shot to the ground, and not much dirt gets on it.
You sure want it as far forward as you can get it. If yours was at the rear of the car (Which I am sure noone would do) and the guy you were racing with had his on the very front of his car. As long as his transponder is ahead of yours, he would win to the line, even if his front bumper was behind yours.

I installed a switch because I have enough problems with battery drain and wanted to be able to turn it off.
While I'd like to move it forward (like to the front bumper), I think it's the NASA rules that require it in the LF wheel well.

I switch makes sense, but I can quarantee I would forget to turn it back on. Back when I raced PCA and my AC worked, I had it on to have both elec fans cool the engine before I went out, and forgot to turn it off, and ran a whole race with the AC on. I have my fans direct wired now, with a huge red light that tells me the fans are on. I've still had them on on track occasionally.
I know I would forget to turn the transponder back on, and have to start from the back of the pack.

Racing Rule #1.."Anything that can possibly go wrong will go wrong.."
Racing Rule #2.."Anyting that cannot possibly go wrong will still go wrong.."
Racing Rule #3.."Anything that goes wrong will always go wrong during the race.."
Correlary to Racing Rule #3..."unless that thing is a transponder failure in which case it will go wrong in Qualifying...."
A switch is just another point of failure...
