Question Safety Harness Recommendations

Looking for harness recommendations that work and fit well with a HANS device. Also questioning whether a sternum strap is beneficial or not...

Thanks in advance for the help.

What type of shoulder belts work best with a HANS®?
As the inventors, developers and only marketers of HANS® devices worldwide, we recommend any 3" belts for use with HANS® devices. Based upon better stretch and aging characteristics, we prefer that drivers use polyester belts. However, both nylon and polyester work fine with HANS® devices.

Earlier versions of the HANS owner's manuals stated that a sternum strap, if used, should be below the ends of the yolks.
Early thought that was the sternum strap would help prevent the HANS device from slipping out from under the belts...however then H&D then stated this was not a problem.
However, any reference to a sternum strap has been removed from the latest version of the HANS manual:

Jim:
Do you have race buckets with shoulder harness pass-throughs? If so, why do you feel the need for a sternum strap?

Hi Jim;

Look at this pic, and answer the sternum strap question for yourself.

This registered 28G from only a 36mph impact! Pretty piddly numbers, yet note the long forward travel of the shoulders. Need I say more? For what it's worth, I used to be a proponent too until I started studying bio-mechanics more closely!

As for belts, any 6-point (twin sub) system that can be configured in a hip cradle setup will make a good start. Then, those that control hip motion the best, work the best in general, and with an H&N device. The order of effectiveness is "V", "T", "Direct Loop". E-mail me direct for more formal ideas.

I like my Schroth Hybrid II, HANS-specific shoulder straps. I find the 2" part of the shoulder belt fits my HANS better than the 3" belt I've had in other cars. My HANS has the "wings", though.

You should seriously consider 2" lap belts, if your sanctioning body allows. Supposed to be a much better fit for the pelvis where 3" laps belts can do more soft tissue damage.

stick with schroth. They have the best and smallest belt/harness adjustment sliders, unlike the big and cumbersome Sabelt, Sparco, Simpson adjusters....

I got the Schroth Profi II HANS and really like them, 2" lap belt too...I find the adjusters to work really well compared to the Sabelts I had, like night and day!

I just noticed the layback style of seat used in the photo..(video) My seat back is much more vertical.

Do you think that would make a diffence in G forces? or belts?

Yes Bill;

Seat angle does make a difference in how the belts load. I came across that somewhere in my studies. I'll have to go back and see if I can find where I saw that.
