Infineon/Sears Point...What is a good lap time for a stock 996?
This was my second time out at Infineon Raceway and I was feeling pretty fast so I unscientifically timed myself around the track. I ended up around 2:03 and 2:05. I wasn't under 2 minutes for sure. Is this a decent time or do I have a lot of room to improve? I do have Dunlop R compounds that have a few miles on them already. I have the carosel dialed, that's where I do most of my passing. How fast do you go through 9? Are you full out on the front straight all the way up the hill? I usually let off make 1.
I would like break 2:00 next year. Do you think I could make it with coilovers, brake pads/lines? Will those make a 5 second difference? I know hoosiers will knock off maybe 2 seconds but that's a short term solution. I'd like to do it on MPSCs.

Bill Hartsock was turning 1:51's there last month with POC. He's driving a 99' 996 with ROW suspension, Hoosiers, and very well set up. Engine and trans are stock though the car is used strickly for track. He runs PCA C stock, and POC M Improved. Oh and he drives the bleep out of it...

I was out there monday with the stock wheels, silver 996. So you have a GT3 and you were out there in an M3?
Did you see the guy in the Radical do a 720 wall grind to revert? Nice move but no points for broken rear end.

2:03-05 is not bad. Your 2:00 goal is good. Any street cars that laps SP under 2:00 is no slouch. John, tell me why are you in a M3?? I want to hear the story. :-)

i have the dunlop ssrs too. they do get greasy but find they are a better tire if you are still learning car control. very predictable break away and they talk to you (screech). you can throttle steer all throughout the carousel .
need to get a lap timer

I'm thinking that my car needs a suspension upgrade more than anything else. Now that I have R compound tires, the standard US suspension is too soft, and the car would like to be lower. If I do anything else to mine, it will be RoW 030 or X74 suspension.
Do you notice your tires having less grip after 5-6 laps, when they're really hot? If not, be careful, because mine seem to lose some of their grip after a while, which was a little bit scary at first.
Ghetto Racer (aka Frank, right?) - you were my in-car instructor at my first 2 track days ever, with Unlimited Laps.

at sears, kevin buckler and another world best type driver, ran 5 turbos at sears on street tires. the best lap time was in the 1:55 range, with the average lap being in the 1:57 range. the most "undrivable" turbo , was the 959!
The POC 996 is pretty generous for its class in R5 or V3, as their weight starts at 3050lbs while a similar 928 has to weigh 3505lbs with no real mods available. (with similar hp of 320 each )
1:51 with a stock 996 at sears is pretty quick, especially for someone not that familar with the track.
I would imagine that the 2:00 barrier is doable, even with street tires. However, the POC 996 times were done on DOT race rubber. thats worth about 4-5 seconds easy
