The POC 996 is pretty generous for its class in R5 or V3, as their weight starts at 3050lbs while a similar 928 has to weigh 3505lbs with no real mods available. (with similar hp of 320 each )

1:51 with a stock 996 at sears is pretty quick, especially for someone not that familar with the track.

I would imagine that the 2:00 barrier is doable, even with street tires. However, the POC 996 times were done on DOT race rubber. thats worth about 4-5 seconds easy

POC/PCA's base weight for a 99' 3.4 litre 996 is 2910 lbs. with 296 HP. He ran on Hoosiers.

i think its close to the same range of weight for the newer versions too, putting out 325hp. and still qualifying as M class Improved

yah i'm sure the 996 on good street tires can break 2:00 with a good driver. my civic is 2300 lbs w/driver and it makes 130 whp. on good street tires (Falken Azenis 205/50/15) i lapped it consistantly at SP @ 2:02. 996 will beat that easily as it should handle as good, have better brakes, and lot more acceleration. now, of course we know the car can do it but hopefully the original poster takes his time and step up progressively.

959 "only" did 1:55? must be ****ty street tires or something, i'd think it do a bit better than that...

Then he is leaving almost 50hp on the table. He is allowed to do the x51 pkg and that makes the 996 a top car for C stock, IMO.

you got to drive a race track on real street tires to appreciate that time! (1:55 or less) it was a 5 car turbo weekend with two top racers, and there was one stock 996 twinn turbo, a 500hp 993 turbo, a 959 and some 500hp 911. anyway, the problem with the 959 was turbo lag, and it didnt handle very well , compared to the new technology.

when speed GT came to town, on street Toyos T1s, (tread wear 280) the top guys ran 1:49 but most ran in the 1:52 range. And these are some of the best drivers with million dollar teams. I was in the top 20 with a stock 928 running a street sport suspension, the spec tires and ran 1:56 at 3000lbs. Later with DOT race rubber, ran 1:50.1 and recently, 1:49.2. my car now is very close to a Grand Am Cup GS porsche 996 in preparation and performance. We both will run 1:40.xx at laguna seca.

At sears (Infinion raceway) a stock 996 can easily break 2:00, even on street tires.

in 2001 top 3 SWC GT qualifying times (shaved Toyo T1S street tires):

1 81 Johannes van Overbeek/Danville/CA Flextronics/Intel/Porsche 911 Cup 500 1:48.244 83.810
2 42 Peter Cunningham/W. Bend/WI RealTime Racing/Acura NSX SC 200 1:48.356 83.724
3 9 Michael Galati/Olmstead/OH Champion Audi/Audi S4 Comp. 100 1:48.627 83.515

in 2002 I think they skipped Infineon. in 2003 they are on RA1's:

1 7 Bill Auberlen/Hermosa Beach/CA BMW Team PTG/BMW M3 500 1:41.560** 89.326
2 73 Phil McClure/Floris/IA Aggregate Industries/3R Racing/Corvette Z06 200 1:42.595** 88.425
3 22 Mike Fitzgerald/Phoenix/AZ 1st Interstate Inns/3R Racing/Porsche 911 Cup 100 1:42.611** 88.411

this year they ran:

1 28 Lou Gigliotti/Dallas/TX LG Pro Long Tube Headers/Corvette C6 500 **1:39.581 91.463
2 6 Leighton Reese/Minnetonka/MN Banner Engineering/Corvette C6 200 **1:39.982 91.096
3 55 Wolf Henzler/Nürtingen/GR Applied Mtrls/Farnbacher Loles/Porsche 911 Cup 100 **1:40.297 90.810

ps, Mark, our little white Civic is right next to you at the SCCA botth @ SF Auto Show. :-) on its track shakedown @ Infineon last month we ran into eletronics and clutch problems. but we were still able to run 1:54.x witn full thread RA1's. our goal is to hit 1:50 flat. car weights 2375 lbs with driver and makes 230 whp.

The times below are qualifying times, and they usually blow out times in qual, and race times are about 1-2 seconds slower
Big adder below is that the 2001 times were the short track, short turn7, and in the race they were in the 1:50.xx range.

last year, they ran the 1:39.5, with the LONG turn 7, so thats really a 1:37.5 on the short turn 7

(they did the Long turn 7 in 2003 too! so, auberlin was in the 1:39 equiv for the short turn 7.

I was checking your car out there! looks like a little ripper!!! 230rwhp?? 2300lbs???? that would be fun !!!!

So anderson's time a couple weeks back would have been good enough for 2nd place on the start grid of SWC GT? Nice! 1:39:?? is smoking anyway you cut it! But that was with slicks!

Remember, Andersons time, as fast as it was (and it was real real fast!) was with the short turn 7 at Infinion. add 2 seconds. so, a 1:39.9+ 2 seconds is a 1:42 on the long track. that was a top 5 time in the race last year and this year. (last year Anderson did finish 10th in that power packed field!) but anderson was running slicks in the POC race.

the interestin thing, is that this year, even with that blazing 1:39.5 by the speed GT corvette, Andersons time of 1:45.1 last year (same track config ) wouldnt have even been in the top 20 times in qual) However, his race time of 1:45.1 would have still been a top 10 tiime this season right there with Derek Bell.
go figure. the fastest race lap was in the 1:43 range this season. I think pros have some unusual ability, especially now, to make a real fast flyer qual lap. the race times are curiously the same this season. Nice to see that anderson would or could have been even faster this season at the speedGT race if he could run. oh well, its time for ITE SCCA for him or the V8supercar series!

anyway, the 1:39.5 qual by the speed GT this season was with the long turn 7 and on Toyos. so, call the combination with slicks and the short 7 in the 1:36.5 range. Hmmmmm curiously close to the ALMS GT last year and GT2 times this year!!!

SpeedGT = ALMS GT2???? Nahhhh, it cant be!!!!!

speed gt has just got out of control now!

Wow so the RA-1s made a 4-5 second difference? That's huge. I actually have the T1-S right now on my 19inch wheels and noticed a big difference between those and the Dunlop SP Race tires R compund.

I'd say a 996 on street tires should be able to run 1:56's pretty easily at Sears.

My car has a stock 964 motor and weighs 2500 pounds. It ran a 1:52 in last year's Open Track Challenge in its first visit to Sears, on 200-treadwear BFGoodrich T/A g-force KD's.

This; "I'd say a 996 on street tires should be able to run 1:56's pretty easily at Sears", sounds like a pretty bold statement, depending on what you mean by "street" tires. If you're talking about Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, or a modified car, then I could see it. But if you're talking about a stock 996 on non-R compound street tires, I'm not sure if it could do 1:56's at Infineon, and I wouldn't consider it easy.

But I don't claim to know much, so if I'm wrong, please educate me. Has it been done? Or better yet, what's the best anyone's done in a truly STOCK 996 at Infineon?

I'll grant you that it's easy to be bold when I haven't driven a stock 996 at Sears. So take my statement with a grain of salt, and the phrase 'pretty easily' to mean with a really good driver.

But Spec Miatas run :57's at Sears, don't they? When I was there 10 days ago, there was a stock street GT3 on crappy Michelin street tires (not MPSCs, which are r-compound), and he was running :54's.

Maybe :58's for a 996? Are there PCA GGR results somewhere online?

The last time I was there, which was 2 years ago this month, I ran 1:49's and 1:50's consistently. I was weighing in at 3045 lbs, running PSS9's and Pirelli slicks. Could not really get the most out of the slicks because of the suspension but they were fun nonetheless. Had Sparco seats and DAS rollbar in that weight. Everything was stock 993.
