Not funny to me. That poor schmuck. My heart was pounding, I really feel for the guy.

Aw, you have a heart, that's sweet. No, I'm not being facetious, I mean it. It's still funny, though, in a bittersweet, sad sort of way.

What really scary/frustrating is the mind-set of that starter. Was he being punitive, or simply ignorant?

I thought this was already covered...

When the GRID marshall gives you the point, you go now!
or wait till the end of the line. (ie., you / your car is not ready to race now).

(same as starting from pit lane, after the start)

the correct thing to have done was have the griding corrected during the warning count down. (typically a 5 minute, 3 minute, then a 1 minute, and go.)

I'm actually amazed they allowed him to pass all those cars under a double yellow.... I'd think he would have gotten a open black flag, or the field would get a wave off on the start. (but on a busy weekend at a long course, in the small IT group....)

-but I sure felt his pain!

Sitting around the paddock at Summit Point between races yesterday someone mentioned "I was SEVENTH!" Turns out that EVERYONE there had seen it. What was news to me is that I had met the driver last fall, raced with him last month and was sitting next to him yesterday when the topic arose. It's a classic video, worth watching again. (I have been promised a view of the uncut version which has some bits not suitable for public consumption.)

Oh yeah, Ken came third in the race yesterday. He is quick.

It was one of Ken's very early races, and yes it's a classic.
As Chris said, Ken developed into a very quick and capable driver. Odd thing is that he always seems to be among the first to grid these days.

whats the rule on that. can you run to the front on the out lap before the start???

on a serous note, say you have to pull over to put you hood pins in on the warm up lap, can you pass back to find you original position? or if your car dies and then restarts and you loose 4 rows , same question.

Others can chime in with definitive guidance, but if you are not in your proper grid position by the 1 minute whistle you start from the back. Also if you cannot leave the grid when the pace car moves out for some reason, you start from the back.
