Default LSD vs Open Diff

Hey guys,
I might be buying a 944 for track duties, is there an advantage of having LSD in a track car or no? The price on the car is diffrent if i get it with LSD, if there is no advantage of having LSD then i'll get it with open diff and save the money for other mods. (roll cage, seats, ect.)

TIA!

Yes, limited slip is valuable. My personal observation is that it is worth 2 seconds a lap at Lime Rock on a 944 NA and perhaps more on a 944 turbo.

LSD makes a big difference, I use one on a reg 944, and the turbo really needs one. The clutches in the LSD do need service periodically, but it is worth it. Finding a used LSD is really hard, so buy it up front if possible.

LSDs will also introduce understeer under deceleration which is helpful when trail braking. For example, my '94 Turbo has and came stock with a 20/100 LSD. It limits slip by only 20% under acceleration but locks to 100% at deceleration. This creates massive understeer under braking, but this understeer is countered by the oversteering tendancy of the 911 (particularly a fat *** turbo) when slowing and turning. If you get it just right, you can be quick at the start of a turn...

Does anyone know what type the 944's have. (As jupe talks about the 20/100)

Its safe to assume that LSD is an advantage to have then correct?

Unless you are going to race it, you can get any ratio you want from a place like GT. I believe the factory units were 40/40.

My strong advice is learn about the classes before you do any mods. Too many people class themselves out of competition by modding their car for fun or DE. That was my case for years so I didn't race. Now I have a stock car and can enjoy racing!

Jupe,
I had planned on keeping it stock, but adding a roll cage, seats and harnesses.

Could you guys link me to some class rules? PCA and DE are prob the main things I will race.

The factory LSDs for the 944s are a ZF clutch type with 40% lock, but I have never seen any published numbers on unloaded (deacceleration) slip.

For PCA Club Racing, you much use the factory type to remain stock. If you install a quaife, torsen, or any torque biasing type differential, it is a progressed modification.

Go to PCA.org and click on the Club Racing bar and check for the rules. Kind of a long read to find the rules relating to car preparation, but its in there.
