Was luckey enough to be present at a pitch that the chief of safety engr for GM gave on head restraints, nets, etc earlier this year. Does the safety for the factory corvettes, yada yada yada ...bottom line, Hans is the best from safety standpoint. You should have seen the video's of the dummy's heads flopping around in crash tests.

...oh yea, one other thing that was mentioned that threw me. throw the neck collars out the window. no benefit on safety (except maybe helping hold your head up during corning), and actually add to the moving mass of your head helmet in crash.

I have not installed my rollbar yet. When I do, is there any downside to setting the guides for the 6-point harness in accordance with the HANS/FIA specs? Would those settings be ok for use without a HANS or with an Isaac?

HANS

Why: research, sanctioning body(s) approval, Ralf S. crash, etc...

Use it in a '62 356, '66 911 2.0L and a '74 RSR 2.8L.

Just curious, was his bottom line (HANS) based on test comparisons against the other (R3, ISAAC) devices, or simply based on the fact that the HANS passed their testing?

The latter. He didn't specifically have anything concrete to say against the ISAAC (handwaving only, no data), and it was before the R3 hit the market. I was there too, actually arranged for Tom (Gideon) to be there. Definitely worth getting to, if you can find one of these presentations (this one was through NASA). I really wish there was better dissemination of this info.

I did not like the R3 because the seat work required to make it comfortable and it would not work well between cars. Did I miss something in the those comments above about the R3?

In order for the R3 to be really comfortable, the "U" shaped pad should be velcro'd to the seat back. I really don't see it being a problem not using the pad as a passenger. The R3 back brace is not all that thick, and no other H&N device will work with the 3 point belts that typically are in student's cars.

What does the R3 cost? I am thinking that this one might be the way to go for instructors.

We do not allow people on the track with 3 point belts in either PCA or POC out west.

That must certainly 'thin the herd a bit' with respect to Green group

HANS.

Two small kids; small investment for safety. Went with the popular choice, following the masses. Also, checked it out locally at Hubbard Downing before purchase.

I still haven't installed the R3 u-shaped foam in my Recaro SPG, because I stopped noticing the R3 after about 15 minutes. It's pretty benign, and I really like the ability to go car to car.

No 3-points at all in PCA DE's out west? Really?
