Default painless wiring harness

I was thinking about cleaning up the main harness on my 944.
I quickly realized this task would be next to impossible because its really one big mess up by the fuse box. Ripping out the stereo and extra crap wiring would be next to impossible without screwing up the rest.

Does anyone have experience with the harnesses etc from painlesswiring.com?
Or know any alternatives?

It looks like a pretty good product to me.

I used one on my 944T GT3S car. I took out every piece of wire except the brake light wire and the fuel level sender. Made life easy and I got rid of all the '86' vintage wiring.

I used one on a Chevy hot rod of mine. It was well marked and went in very easy, plus the manual is a great reference if you change anything in the future. A couple of my friends have used them too and only had good experiences. I haven't called the tech line personally but I was told they are very helpfull too.

So this is interesting to me as I've been thinking about rewiring the car. Do you just adapt their generic kit or is there something else involved?

Yes.

I'm not sure which kit I'm going to get yet, but they don't have any Porsche specific kits.
But they have a bunch of packages, and some specifically for race cars.

I just removed 50 lbs. of Porsche wire and electricals from a 928 and rewired with a kit from "Ron Francis" Very nice quality and a variety of options. The big difference between "Painless" and "Francis" is that with the Francis kit you run the wire FROM the end point, lights, ignition, ect....TO... the fuse box. It makes for a more simple installation. Actually, if I did it all over again I would buy components from a specialty auto wiring company like "Waytek" and just buy the items that I need at a fraction of the kit price. These kit prices add up very quickly and you end up throwing away alot of wire and stuff you don't need. When it comes down to doing the job, you run one wire at a time. Having a pre-printed label on it does not make the job go any faster. Make sure you have good connectors and solder each terminal. Crimping just will not do it. This was my first rewire experience. It was time consuming but pretty simple.

Thanks for the insight Lloyd.. I might reuse the factory fuse box and just trace and cut what I don't need. There are not that many things going on there.
