Default Toyo RA1 users - Need your advice

Hey Guys!

Just wondering if you could tell me if I have gotten the right amount of wear out of my Toyo RA1s. I have a 99 996 with PSS9s, Roll bar and besides that, everything is completely stock (car weights about 3200 lbs). I have 245/40-18s in Front and 275/35-18s in Rear.

I bought a set of shaved RA1s about a month ago because I heard they lasted very well. Since I live in Florida, we do seem to go through tires alot qicker because of the heat. These tires have eight (8) 30-minute sessions on them (2 sessions were qualifying sessions). We also did a 1-hour enduro on them. Now, my rears are corded and my fronts are close to cording.

My question to all of you RA1 users and tire experts is this.....is this sufficient wear? Maybe it is the fact that I have only had these a month but it seems to me that I didn't get alot of use out of them. PLEASE let me know what you think when you get a moment.

That sounds premature to me. How much camber do you have? What part of the tires are corded? I use un-shaved RA1's on a much lighter car with around -2 degrees camber and the wear is great (double the Michelin Pilot Cups).

Have had the same experience as Grant, again on a car 1000#s less. Your wear seems on the high side. What tire pressures were you running? Might pay to invest in a pyrometer (if you haven't already) to make sure your pressure is reasonable. I run ~38/40 hot. People I know who lurk on the board have gotten two full seasons of AX and DE out of them in cars of similar weight to yours.

See this recent thread about the Toyos and wear.

I have 10 DE days (~ 37 heat cycles) and the tires are still going strong. That's about 37 25 minute sessions. My car weighs in at about 3100 lbs. and I'm running a stock suspension. Camber is around -1.5 at all four corners. But keep in mind my car is a 944S2 with a different weight distribution.

HTH,

no racing, just DE. i flip the tire on rim 1/2 through its life. the grip is consistent all the way through the treads, so you can drive to it cord (well not in a race, but you get the pix).

I think you've also used those tires to drive to a few events as well, so they've certainly gotten lots of mileage.

FWIW, I have yet to get 10 DE days from MPSCs. They always seem to cord before that.

i run toyo on 996c2 with 2.5deg of camber. i drive them on streets as well.
averaging over 4 sets of tires, i get about 4000 street miles and 1000 track miles per set of tires. to get them this far, i need to flip tire on rim to even out wear.

That wear is premature.
I race with RA-1's and have gotten 35 to 48 heat cycles over the past 4 sets.

That is on 2450 lbs 944.

My guess is something is not right with your tire pressures or set-up.

Good point on the setup. When was the last time you had your car aligned? Could it be toe-in/out etc issues? Might be worth having this done, if you haven't had it doen recently (or if you have then go some place else and see if it was doen right!)
