Default SFI Specification 38.1 - Head and Neck Restraint Systems

I just learned that there is a new standard for H&N systems. NASCAR and SCCA Pro have mandated 38.1 systems for their traveling series. So far, only two systems are certified; HANS and R3.

If you use anything else, or are thinking about it, I would suggest you contact the mfg to see if they are certified or in the process.

I take it that means the Isaacs and the Hutchens are a no go. Wonder if they have not gone through the testing procedures yet or if they weren't able to pass.

How does a H&N restraint get approved for the 38.1 spec?

I hadn't noticed that you posted the same info on the other thread - my source is the same as yours. LOL

I did ask for a copy of the spec and will post anything I learn from it. I wonder that same thing about Isaac and Hutchens.

Call me cynical about SFI, but I'll bet if Isaac joins SFI it will meet the spec.

So I take it that you have seen the spec and it does not require single release point for restraints. What else is in the spec? Can you post a copy or a link to the new spec?

Thanks

No. I'm just terribly cynical about SFI. I don't trust them after the belt BS. IMHO there should be independent testing and certification of safety gear. SFI is just not independent. That is why I will trust Snell and the FIA many times over in comparison with SFI.

BTW, continuing with my mistrust of SFI....

Just checked their website. From now on, SFI rated suits are only good for 4 years plus the year of manufacture (so net, between 4 and 5 years).

They also list very few of their specs. Spec 38.1 (head and neck restraints) is not listed. Most are unlisted. I can tell you that when I was researching the belt issue, I asked SFI for the testing and certification procedures. What was in their own documents was not what was published elsewhere. They damned sure couldn't pass an ISO audit. Be wary of SFI. From now on, all my safety gear will be FIA homologated.

It looks like it should work better than a HANS in case of impact but I can't think of how uncomfortable it must be to have that contraption in your back...

I have to agree that I don't really trust SFI but the fact that two major racing bodies have adopted the recommendation, that would force Isaacs and Hutchens to join. (I would think)
