Default Fikse failure

I just heard that a friend's 18" Mach V Fikse came apart at Mid Ohio. The wheel was used for no more than one track season. Luckily he did not hurt the car in the resulting spin. Have folks heard of this occurring to Fikse's before? I always considered Fikse a very reputable track-worthy brand. What would cause this? The wheel has never been disassembled since new.

Have to describe the failure a little better to guess as to what caused it. If he likes to use the curbs as shortcuts, any wheel won't last a season.

I believe that the rim "separated", with ~60% of the bolts shearing off.

On another car, there was another Fiske wheel that I saw at this event: the spokes has some notable cracks in them. Fortunately, the driver noticed these before any failure occurred.

I have a set of the 18's as well and during the CMP Club Race last year I had a tire go down during the enduro. After the race, we noticed that at least a third of the bolts had sheared. When we sent the rim back to Fikse, the acknowledged that they had a bad shipment of bolts that went into the rims. We have since had them ship us all new replacement bolts for the rest of my rims and that shouldn't be a problem again. I'd suggest you research that option.

I have too much invested in Fikse's to make a change now and they are still great, light-weight rims. Hope that helps.

No problems with my Forgeline 3 pc wheels after 2 hard seasons. And I do run over the curbing. I did have a Kinesis wheel center crack. However that wheel was 6 years old.

If you are hanging onto old Fuchs you might want to consider fatigue. I have seen a few nasty looking old Fuchs.

In a word yes. A friend of mine who AXs(no track time) a 993 turbo has Mach Vs and three of his four wheels developed cracks in one of the spokes. He complained to Fikse and received an new set of wheels. These wheels were at least two years old at the time. Interestingly they have changed the design and the spokes are no longer razor edged, they now are curved.

I was on track at the Mid Ohio CR when a red 911 (F Class) broke a rim and spun under the bridge. I don't think it was a Kinesis though. I believe it was a Fuchs - or a close repo. It looked like the rim broke at mid-spoke all the way around - very nasty. The car had some minor damage - I think he tagged the tire wall.

I could have been much worse.

Has the sealant been nicked when mounting tires or maybe did the bolts loosen up? Assuming the wheel isn't bent, the only place it can lose air is where the two halves come together. Maybe a reseal is in order?

A friend of mine had cracks in his FM-10's that were on a 928 GTS with heavy track use. There was never a complete failure and Fikse did an upstanding job of replacing the centers under warranty from what I understand.

Granted, the 928GTS is quite a heavy track car so that could be the reason for fatigue in the wheel centers.

I think it's safe to say no wheel used on the track is indestructible.....so one should check wheels before track events just like you should go over the whole car.
