986 Endurance Racer Build
#48
Front fender were spaced out by unfolding the fender flange bends to were in bolts to the body. Deducing the 90 degree flange bends to something like 80- 85 degrees we gained 3/4" per side. Then to make the hood gap to the fenders look normal we moved the hood forward by about 1" also requiring the front bumper to be move forward the same amount.

Race results: Saturday was a 7 hour endurance race. It started in the rain and was rainy for the first 5 hours. It started to dry only for the last 2 hours.
Sahlens won with a fast lap of 2:12.6 in their Boxster.
Our team did well with the 944's finishing 2nd, 5th and the Boxster 18th. We started dead last in the field of 85 cars. (start position is determined by a random draw) The Boxster is not at a competitive pace.
I'm not sure if this is all due to the automatic or potentially sick 97,000 mile motor or gearing.
Sunday 7hours was sunny and dry. but the racing luck (bad) bit us. We started on pole (reverse order from Saturday) see pic of our cars 3 wide on the front straight at the start. At about the halfway point our sister 944 car went off in the bus stop punctured the oil pan, unknown to the driver, was loosing oil and the driver went back on the track into the carousal T5. Our Boxster was the next car thru T5 and lost it in the oil and hit the guard rail on the outside. So we have damage repair work in addition to trying to make the car faster. We will be back....

I'm only getting 115mph on the straight before the bus stop. The 944 are at 128.
And i'm at 6200 rpm so I think my gearing is too tall.
So I would like to change the final ratio (lower, high numerically). Does any one know of a source for a ring and pinion for the ZF5HP19 Tip?
Or what Audi or VW ZF5HP19 with lower final drive will swap into the 2.7L Boxster?
If I change the final ratio I think I also need to re-calibrate the TCU trans speed sensor as it will not agree with the wheel speed sensor input and that could cause issues. I think.
Any one know for sure?

Yes, and perhaps there is more drag. I found a post from anther series that showed top vs no top. I don't think my top would be that bad.

I just did top vs no top test in our NC Miata Champcar at Monticello Motor Club two weekend ago. The data was collected over 40+ laps and shows a 6mph gain with the top on and just on the back straight alone lowered the lap time over .5 of a second. (The the middle corner and corner exit speeds were all within .1-.3 mph when making the calculation) The shift points were also noticeable different with the roof on as I was shifting 25+ yards sooner with the top on.
I did notice one or two Boxster team this past weekend at the VIR 24H race running 15" wheels on there Boxster's. This would charge you no points and would help with your gearing being to tall.

Good info. I too was at VIR (but not with the Boxster) I think the fastest lap for a Boxster was 2:15.7 ALT Speed works finished 2nd (only cause we broke) The 944s were 2:14.1 and 2:14.5 with issues I think we ran a 2:12 last year.
I'm planning to be at TMP with a manual. If its not fast there I will down size the wheels for sure.

I'd think you couldn't get the tire width you'd want with 15" wheels for cornering. what's maximum 225?
One trade-off was to use the oem fronts to reduce the drag, but sacrificing some front end grip.
