I drove a 500hp (at the rear wheel) Viper ACR at VIR and hit an indicated 170. I wasn't looking at the speedo, the owner in the passenger seat was.

My 993 maybe hits 145 and after driving the Viper I felt like I was crawling....

Really? That's interesting. Last fall I hit an indicated 145-150 in my 951 and in an RSA as well. I would have thought that those cars would be faster than that.

Yep, we thought so too! We kinda expected higher speeds... but... at last year's Viper Days meet at VIR, we didn't see higher speeds in the stock class. Maybe it was due to... track conditions, we were using a GPS system.. to eliminate possible optimistic speedometers!

I remember see Montoya doing a lap of Monza at an Average of 160+ mph. I think that was offically the fastest lap of any road course by any car.

I think the closed course record was set by Cart at California Speedway at 240 MPH a few years ago. I THINK it was faster than Donohoe at Talladega in the 917/30.

Either way Brainaird seems to be one of the fastest tracks PCA club racing visits.

FWIW- I can do 140 plus a bit into turn #1 in the pictured vehicle which is stock. I've also experienced that feeling of uncertainty in turn #2. Now I take the "CS" line along the inside.

The 996TT is truly "slighly modded". Upsolute, new diverter valves, open exhaust. Maybe 520HP. I can get to indicated 170-171 without
a passenger. Actual may be 165-167. Maybe time for a roll cage?

I know that my speed at the end of the front strait at VIR is about 149-151 and a CUp Car is 139-141. This with the Cup Car entering at 2-3 MPH faster.

Hey Chris, have you taken your 996 TT to Road Atlanta? If so, out of curiousity.... What's your speed at the end of the back straight?

My 01's top speed was about the same at both tracks. I could stay with the 996 TT's but the GT 2 blew me away!

Now that's pretty much a " drag race" down the back straight at Road Atlanta.

The GT 2 has a big jump in hp. over our Z06's... that's why I ask.

I haven't taken my 04 to either track yet! Will have additional data later this year.

I have never pushed the car hard at Road atlanta. I think I would be about 162-163 there.

Your terminal velocity on the back straight at VIR is a function of how agressive you take the left hand kink at the end. I.E. how much are you slowing down before the left hander.....

I slow to about 110-115, which is faster than most (most = most non-Porsche racers....) I thought I was fast thru this section until watched a well driven Cup Car...... Almost like he didnt even brake...

Anyway..... lots of the Viper guys will fly by at 150-160 then brake at the 5 marker. Hurry up and Wait racing league!!!

Ive heard that the viper transmissions are much more efficient. also remember, those numbers are average and change with speeds and RPMS.

also, its common to see tweeked 911 turbos (2002) make 510rear wheel hp without a lot of fuss. (just saw one recently at Racers Group at Sears point) Now, no way that stock engine is in the 650hp range. however, i would say that it is in the 600hp range. Meaning that the losses of a 911 transmission are probably less. plus many of the dyno runs, sometimes , disconnect the front drive

I believe that the short course at Watkins glen is the fastest on the GA circuit and possibly in the country. We averaged 115-116 there in 2002 in the GT M3 that I was driving. Daytona is also fast but the infield has some very slow corners. (35 or so in the horseshoes) The top speed of our SGS cup car in this years Daytona 24 was 172-174. At VIR the cup car can do 150-152 which is about the same at Road Atlanta. All these numbers are from the data acquisition system and not indicated (which most of the time is a little off ) I think Roebling road is also a pretty fast track average speed wise. A 1:13 there in our cup car is averaging 99mph w/ a top speed of 150+ down the straight. I cant imagine that the speed gt cars are doing 175+ at Road America but they do have good power. Mont Tremblant has a very high average for a gt car but without the long straight, I think the M3 GTR I drove there last year only hit 140 on the back but averaged over 100. Allot of 5th gear corners

Cory, have you taken that Cup Car to LMS? Where we can only average 85.5 mph at RRR, we are just shy of 92 mph at LMS in my ITA car. I remember David Farmer racing in a NASA big bore race there a couple years ago and *thought* he was in the high teens, I can't recall his actual fast lap time. I think its the fastest track we run in the SE Div North with the SCCA.

I forgot about Lowes, I haven't had the cup car there but I did test and run a speedvision race there in 2000. The car was a 993 street car converted to semi RSR status. I have also run my brother's E class 944 turbo there. I think the lap times where in the 1:21 or so range? (it has been a while so I dont remember the exact times, could be way off ) but when we ran it in speedvision they put a lame chicane before we entered nascar 3-4. Lowes would definatley be up there in average speed, I wonder how close to Daytona the average would be? I think a little slower.
