Well I've running HPDE's for a couple of years in my 2012 911 Turbo and I'm ready to get a dedicated track car. I love driving my car but I don't want to hack it up. So my question is what is the best year/generation of 911 to build a dedicated track car? Keeping in mind weight, aftermarket parts availability and are the years more afforable car and parts wise for the best choice? I'm sure it comes down to opinion and amount of my budget. I know I can go out and buy a GT3 and be good to go but I'm thinking something late 70's thru to the 996's.

What would you start with and why?

996 probably most budget friendly. Can probably buy one built already. Invest 2500 into IMS if not done already and good to go. Building yourself, still the same, just costs of building the car. You can find them for low 20's (maybe high teens) all day. Lots of spares and parts online due to commonality. There was at one point a spec 996 class being established, don't know what happened to it though.

Personally biased here....

I've been having a TON of fun with my 996.

Started off with the X74 suspension and some Tarett stuff.

Then progressed to Ohlins, Elephant Racing, and full solid end suspension.

Then started stripping weight out.

Then did a 3.8L conversion.

It's a track monster now. Light, nimble, gobs of power, tons of fun.

If I were to do it all over again - I would have bought this car and NEVER looked back. It's fast as hell, reliable (owned by a Porsche shop) and has a proven track record. Outstanding deal too...

Every time I get to drive my friends '84 E-class car I get out with a smile. It is so direct and manual and when you get it right it is extremely rewarding.

Buy a Lotus Exige/Elise, S2000, older Z06 or something else that doesn't cost $15-25k to fix when the engine blows up

Best track 911 is the one already built.
And one that is correct for a given class in PCA.
Stock E class 911 SC or Carrera is the largest field of 911 in PCA.
Cant go wrong with the most popular 911 in pca racing.
I know, I have two of them.

What is the budget? The best 911 track car is the new mid engine RSR.

The best 911 track car for what sort of money? Older air cooled have a lot of character. Newer cars are faster and easier to drive. Factory race cars like the GT3 Cup or even GT4 clubsports are a blast and tend to hold value better than a built car. Too many choices. Have to start with ballpark budget to buy and operating cost.

Do you plan on racing it or just DE it? If racing is your future you want to make sure you buy or a build car to the rules of a certain class within PCA. If De'ing depending on your driving skill you may want something with at least the HP of a 996 as most DE cars now are north of 300hp. Not fun to keep your arm out the window all day. I have owned and raced a 996, a 996 cup, and 2 88 911's. All are fantastic cars and you can't go wrong with any of them depending on your budget.

Thank you for all the help. For now I'm thinking just a DE car and my budget I was thinking about $50k. It looks like a 996 GT3 is probably the way to go.
