Default Where to sell?

The time has come to part with a car to make way for another project. I've previously bought and sold cars on E-bay, Autotrader, Rennlist, Bring a Trailer, Craigslist, etc. None of those seem the right venue for this car, however.

I'm hoping those of you with experience with higher-end auction houses (Sotheby's, etc) or individual brokers might share your thoughts. Or share what you feel the best way to sell a car in the ~300k range would be? The wrinkle is that it's a one-off rather than a series production car, so valuation is a bit tricky.

Any help would be appreciated, and those of you with CGTs, Singers, etc seem the rights guys to ask.

Well I think it's very cryptic...but i'll bite.

Step 1: hire a photographer. Let him truly document the car.

Step 2: gather all documents

Step 3: set a timeline for how fast you want it sold

Step 4: do some more research, answer these- who does the best with:
1) race car?
2) concept car?
3) coachbuilt car?
4) RUF/ Specialist brand within brand?

Thanks and and yea... It's tricky asking advice from the right guys (even if this forum is dead) without violating etiquette and effectively posting a "for sale" ad, which is not the intention.

The car's been professionally photographed, I have a couple hundred shots.

Soon, but I'm trying not to let the tail wag the dog.

That's where I could use help- it's really none of the above. It's a one-off hot-rod that's fairly well known and has been in magazines:https://www.twinsparkracing.com/wp-c...ng-by-WEVO.pdf
And despite occasionally writing on Porsches I've been immersed in my day job the last couple years, so I'm removed from the community that knows such things.

Wow i just read the article posted. Very impressive work! I can see how its difficult to even know were to begin to sell a car like this. Its incredible to think of how much work/engineering has gone into this car. Best of luck selling.

Just my opinion but seems to me that this car has a story to tell and therefore needs someone to tell that story. You're not going to get that on the traditional sites like BAT, Autotrader, CL. I would lean towards one of the higher end auction houses that will photo and write up the car in a way that will tell that story properly. I also people who are looking for these unique cars gravitate towards those houses. Having Sotheby's or someone similar will add credibility to the price you're wanting too.

How about Wayne Carini of chasing classic cars?

A little tongue in cheek, but maybe not.

best of luck

I've loved this car since it was first introduced on Pelican years back. The problem with this car is that it's going to only appeal to a very small pool of people who just like oddball (in a good way) cars. I look at your car very similar to the "1BADGT2" 996 GT2 and it's build/documentation can be seen on 6speedonline. Both have been extremely modified with fantastic documentation and pics along the way. Both have no cost spared builds. Here's the part that I don't think you'll like. I don't think either of them will sell for anywhere near what they're worth (what it cost to build). I know the heavily modded GT2 was at CJ's Scottsdale McLaren dealership for a while. Not sure if it's still there, moved to another dealership or sold. But if he offers advice on selling such a unique car, it's definitely worth listening to what he has to say. You may have better luck with a specialty consignment dealership or using a Broker who specializes in exotic/collector cars as they may have quite the Rolodex filled with people who may be interested in such a unique car. Personally, I LOVE your car and wish you the best of luck in finding a new owner and to the person who does pick it up, I'm sure they will NOT be disappointed!

This car built on a 911 VIN would fetch exponentially more money. No matter how much stuff has been put into it, it is still a 912.

I came close to doing a build like this on a 912; at the last minute I found a 73 911to use as a base. Net result is instant 50K more value based upon the vin alone.

A 73 911 base would have likely costed much more to buy as a donor so the net result is more or less the same...think for a build like this the initial base is totally irrelevant, I actually like the idea and the madness of being built on a 912!

OP, I just love what you did...dropping a GT3 Cup engine in a pre bumper, completely bonkers!! The car world need more people like you!!

Please do let me know as well what price you had in mind for the car and if it needs anything done or is it ready to go.

Thanks,
MT

I too would be curious to see at what price this car sells for. In the land of purist with matching numbers, it's going to take a special buyer or a very long wait if the OP is looking for $300k or so....good luck with sale, hopefully the new buyer will continue to add miles.

Thanks guys and sorry for the delay- I was traveling in South America for work.

Valuing the car is clearly the challenge, as without benchmarks it's all in the eye of the beholder. A few years ago when I wasn't selling I was offered north of 300. That was when the build and article was fresher, though also before the rise of Singer, Magnus Walker, etc as well as much of the recent run-up in prices. Recently I've heard numbers both well below and above.

Given this it's attractive to put it to auction and let the chips fall where they may. The fees are substantial, but an attractive side effect would be to get me out of the salesman role; something I'm neither comfortable with nor particularly good at. Thus I guess the next step is figuring out which auction house and auction to target... Any thoughts on that subject? I'm in NorCal, I see Mecum is coming up mid-November.

Is there a dedicated/preferred channel for sales in Asia?
Or in the end Sotheby's / Mecum take care of that audience too?

Just a though.

I also agree with Max that the starting base is not very influential on the asking price.
