The crappy CL photo looked like the nose was probably in primer. When the guy offered to deliver it, we had a deal.
At first I assumed it would be a later replacement nose made in the US (those race cars tend to get banged up). But it looked legit, and after a good wash, it cleaned up pretty good. Still has some race car patina.

My initial idea was to do graphics in one of two iconic liveries- either Rothmans, or Coke- used on the Bob Akin car originally owned by my ex-boss Mike Valentine.
But then I realized it might be possible to find out exactly which 962 it was from.

My first clue as to which 962 it was from was the black band across the nose, which is painted on.
I also noticed that the lower scoops for brake cooling are very unusual, and not the usual 962 scoops.
This pic of the Coke car shows the standard front of the 962, with two scoops, and a raised area between them, I assume to let air under the car for ground effects.

It looks like this particular nose (with the unique lower scoops) was maybe only used at that one race. There are some additional holes where probably a wing was attached- so maybe this became a test nose after the Sebring race.
In any case, I am in the process of installing headlights, and recreating all the graphics as faithfully as possible, to restore it to its Sebring configuration.
I've created new vector graphics for everything, and dropped the files off at a sign place to get the vinyl cut.

Close examination shows where some of the original graphics were- you can see the text "MOTOR OIL" and also see the outline of the Havoline logotype in the black area.

Excellent question. It really was an impulse purchase!
It will just barely fit in my tiny 20x28 3-car garage (good thing I have small cars), but now that I know it is legit and kinda historically significant, I might see if BringaTrailer would do it as a charity auction after I get it restored to its 1989 Sebring livery.

It would definitely be cool if you returned to it's '89 livery. If you do make sure you post pictures.
