Default FS 2008 Porsche 997 GT3 Grand Am Cup Updated Price (10/9/13)

This car is sold.

Drastically Reduced For Quick Sale

2008 Porsche 997 GT3 Grand Am Cup For Sale

Fresh off wins at HSR’s 50th anniversary of the 911 at Daytona and Porsche Club of America’s Road America event, our current, highly-competitive, heavily-updated team car is now for sale. This 997 is one of approximately 11 GT3 Cups built by the Porsche factory to Grand Am specifications in 2008 and has since been the recipient of a vast array of the best performance parts available for the 997 including: 997.2 rear wing on factory Cup S uprights, RSR brakes, RSR exhaust, RSR anti-squat and anti-dive suspension links, seam-welded suspension pickup points, carbon fenders, carbon bumpers, cockpit-adjustable swaybars, and Bilstein MDS shocks. Completing this formidable package is the fresh 3.8 liter engine built to the tune of 445hp at the wheels, a Bosch MS3 Sport Cup ECU with traction control, and a fresh transmission. As we need to clear space for a new team project, we need to move this GT3 and have drastically reduced the price to $$$$$$. There is, simply put, no better, more affordable way to win Cup races in 2014.

This GT3 Grand Am Cup was purchased in 2008 by a front running team and campaigned for two seasons including the 24 Hours of Daytona and several other Grand Am events. The car then sat, unused, from 2010 until our purchase in 2012.

Once in the Autometrics Motorsports stable the GT3’s mechanicals were thoroughly inspected and freshened. Underpans were removed and the car was steam cleaned from top to bottom. All fluids were flushed, seals evaluated and replaced where necessary, and every last mechanical component inspected, cleaned and evaluated. A laser-alignment and a corner weight adjustment were performed and the GT3 Grand Am Cup was then evaluated on-track where its setup was further refined and where the GT3 won regularly.

At this point, it was clear that the chassis was both fully-sorted and as good—or better—than anything else on track. This GT3 easily kept up with and bested far more powerful Porsches despite the somewhat mild 3.6 liter it had retained since purchase.

The engine and transmission were then pulled, steam cleaned individually, and wheeled into the cleanroom. Every component was then broken down to the last nut and bolt. All internals were inspected, tested, and replaced if they showed the slightest flaw or wear. Larger pistons and liners took the place of the old 3.6’s and everything was then reassembled to our highest 3.8-liter spec. A new clutch was installed and the GT3’s original blue axles were replaced with large-flange RSR green axles and CV joints. Completely reassembled this package made 445 SAE horsepower (at the wheels with the noise filter set at 3) on our in-house Dynojet chassis dyno. Finally, we added a Bosch MS3 Sport Cup ECU and programmed the GT3 to run with traction control.

The only element of this GT3 that can be improved are the aesthetics which, to be perfect, would require a new roof panel (a not-uncommon repair performed to correct small dents and holes left from removed antennae) and new paint. We have deliberately left the roof panel alone as it does not affect the car’s performance and—as its replacement will necessitate the painting of the GT3—we want the next owner to have the option to paint the car as they choose. This work can be performed by Autometrics Motorsports for an additional charge post-sale.

With outstanding mechanical condition and an extremely high level of tune, this GT3 Grand Am Cup stands ready to win races in 2014 and represents the most car for the money currently available in the Porsche marketplace.

nice car!

I have one of the other 11 '08 Grand Am cars, did they all have seam welded suspension points or did you do that?

The factory grand-am models are definitely rare. They were built in 07,08 and 09. They are very similar to the cup S. The 07 came with the dual flap intake manifold engine (one year before the standard cup did). They all had full mono-ball suspension, RSR headers, RSR brake calipers (and matching uprights), fuel cell, reinforcements on the body for the rear wing mounts, the extra grand-am door bar on the roll cage, the seat belt mounting bar on the main hoop and other differences. The carbon front fenders and front bumper were added by the teams. The 09 model came with the factory cup S front bodywork. Other things like the cockpit adjustable sway bars, seam welding and flaring the rear fenders were allowed so most of the teams made those changes as well. They are a blast to drive! Every year at Daytona a few would get wadded up, so I wonder how many original factory grand am models are left.

This car we are running has been great. It handles extremely well. It has second gen cup speed for less money and is a little unique being a special factory version. We run the larger size tires so the tire wear is better. The RSR calipers use the extra wide pads so they last a long time. It is fun playing with the cockpit adjustable bars. You don't have to pit to make changes so it saves a lot of practice time and they can be changed during the lap for different corners to really fine tune the setup. It is a lot of fun to drive for sure.

Sweet video and sweet car. I noticed you are using the "s80/s100" hoosiers based on your youtube description. I hadn't heard of these before, only the R80/R100. I can't find any info on the hoosier site other than that they exist. Are these a super soft version? Any more info?

Thanks. My understanding is the s80/100 is based on the continental slick they developed for a Carrera cup series in Europe this year. It is not super soft at all. One of its requirements was that is would out last the Michelin. What they learned from the Carrera cup tire, they have applied to the s80/100. They have been updating all their slick tires this year and have made some great improvements. Our intension was to compare these vs a Pirelli dh at road America but the 2nd sprint race was wet so we didn't get a chance.

This is one of the best handling 997's I have driven. Now with the new engine it has the power to match. We plan on taking this car to Daytona PCA if it doesn't sell before then. Paddle shift and Bosch ABS can be installed very easily.

A new Bosch MS3 Sport ECU is going in soon. (Before Daytona) It will be completely user programmable and will have the possibility of traction control.

We did some testing last week with the new Bosch ECU. Worked on the traction control map. A cup car with TC is pretty cool. The plan is to take the car to Daytona next weekend for the PCA race. I am surprised the car is still available. It is hard to beat this level of performance for this sort of money.
