Default Shock Potentiometer Advice

Would anyone have pics of how they have mounted shock pots to a 997 cup?
Better yet, the travel and overall length they used front and rear? I am sure a safe stroke will not be more than 100mm, however the overall length might be the determining factor depending on where/how they are mounted.

Send Jerry Austin (amso3) a note. He has done this recently and might even have a set of sensors ready to go.

Default Shock Pots

TEdean

I put some on a 996 cup a couple years ago and am doing a set on an 05 Cup next week. I believe I used 150 mm Penny and Giles. I don't think 100 mm is quite enough to cover full droop to full compression (on the bump stops). I don't have a full set here currently. Are you running AIM or Motec? Matt is actually using a different type of pot on his car. He'll need to fill us in on that. I'll take photos and provide details next week

The car I'm doing has Motec. That makes me more nervous that mounting pots. I'll take pictures and notes.

On a 997 cup just how much does the spring compress before it binds?
From H&R catalog/cup pdf

2006-2008:
F:85= 49+36
R:88= 58+30

2009:
F:85 49+36
R:93.5= 57.5(?estimated)+36

I think you'll be hard on the bump rubbers before the springs bind. All of that depends on the ride height setting of the car

I was - until I saw the price - 3x a normal sensor!!!!!! I'm going to go with regular linear potentiometers. I have to get measuring and double check the lengths. I think I'm going to be 150mm in the front and 225mm in the rear. I found some that go to 350mm too. BTY - the is all for a 914, not a cup car.

Matt, PM me some pics of where you'd mount 914 pots, please.

Hmm - sounds like you guys are set up with waay more travel than my GT3R. I have some shock pots on the shelf, but haven't mounted yet. I got my shocks from a 3R racing WC car and they have less than 75mm of total travel before they hit the bump rubbers.

The rears seem straightforward enough, it's the fronts that are tricky because of the turning strut. Would love to see some pics of an install for ideas...

I haven't figured all of it out yet, but I have some ideas. I'll shoot you photos as soon as we get them mounted - but it will still be a month or so. Lots of measuring and planning to do!

Couldn't a sting pot be used as well? They are not that expensive.

Maybe? Most won't react fast enough because the spring isn't strong enough to rewind. The string will get a little slack as the suspension rebounds and then rewind real quick. It ends up showing higher shock velocities than what really occurred.
