993 Cup Car vs. 964 Cup Car
#16
I know it is all personal preference, but I have owned and driven a 997 Cup, a couple of 996 Cups and a 993 Cup. I much prefer the 993 Cup. It is much easier to run at the track and much less expensive than the others, and it is no slouch.

Well i have to say, i have always 'wanted ' a 993 cup the day they hit the tracks.
I also think they are more nimble since they dont have trailing arms.
I have driven both and the 993 feels much more like a race care to me.
My understanding was although more expensive to get in, the classic air cooled flat six is much more reliable. .
Any ideas for price ranges? As i posted before, they are all over the map in price.
I have a test and tune event coming up and i will drive them both at WGI one more time and make my decision after those two days.
I know nothing about the 996 cups other than they seem really finicky to me by comparison even though they are indeed fast.
TBD - i know its one of these two, just need to make a decision!! Guess its a good problem to have .. . .

See you there-I will be at the kojote motorsport too! The perfect venue to spend some quality time with the cars!
Are you or anyone you know thinking about getting coached by David Murry?
I guess there are a couple of slots left -

"Is the 993 Cup truly lighter than the 964 or do you just feel that because it has stiffer springs? Mike kind of notes this with his 964s looking awkward in turns: they are too lightly sprung.
I'm a little (actually, very) confused by Glen's comment that 996/997 cars are "more reliable", at least when comparing to a 964 Cup.
I was interested in 993 Cups until I shied away from the cylinder head issue that Geoffrey alluded. So I went 964 Cup and enjoy beating 993 Cups in races as often as I can.
I'd also be curious to know if the 964 Cup you drove was a USA Cup or a true Euro Cup....."
Hi Charles long time no see, the 993 he is referring to is mine. You, like Savenor are one of the fastest 964 Cup drivers, but I do believe that in the big picture the 993 Cups are faster. Also I don't see how the 996 cups are less to run then either the 964 or 993 Cup. Hope to see you at a future race.

That said, the 964 Cup is remarkably quick despite its close-to-street-car underpinnings.
