997 GT3 Cup sequential gearbox?
Hello,
Did 997 GT3 Cup cars come standard with sequential gearbox and if so, what make is the gearbox? And do you have any pics of the gearbox?
I understand that 996 Cup cars came standard with H-gate Getrag gearbox and some racers used Oakley/Holinger sequential conversion kits or complete Quaife 61G sequential gearbox, but not sure about 997.
Thanks in advance.

997 Cup came with a sequential version of the G50 gearbox. The latest 997 RSR comes with a new transmission that shares the internals with the RS Spyder.

Yes but according to Holinger website, it was designed in 2003 (as an aftermarket product) for 996-chassis 911 GT3 cup. Nothing to do with 997.

What I wanted to know is, what make is the shift mechanism and internals that came standard on the 997 Cup by the Porsche factory.
Can't be Oakley because a few years ago Porsche commissioned a Siemens engineer to design an sequential shift mechanism for the 996 Cup and ultimately decided not to use the system for cost reasons, so the designer bought back the rights to the system, and later sold the system to Oakley. Therefore Porsche doesn't have the rights.
So ...?

from what I heard the reason why so many other ALMS teams (such as ferrari ) outsource is because reliability is better...porsche makes their own transmissions or at least it is a "porsche brand".
this is why in USA they can get away with charging 20-30k for a rebuild

analogmike,
I just saw your website about the 2008 GT3 cup. Interesting that its downshifts require the use of clutch and blipping the throttle...
Correct me I'm wrong, AFAIK the Quaife gearbox doesn't require the use of clutch.
There is another aftermarket gearbox - Ricardo 6-speed sequential. Any info on this?

The 997 Cup has essentially the same Holinger internals as earlier models, but with narrower gears and a slightly different mainshaft design. The Quaife isn't popular because it's a heavy slug, while the Ricardo had too light-duty of a main housing to be reliable. The Porsche/Holinger models have their share of problems, but still compare well to the other two (other than pricewise). They all require a tad of finesse on the downshift to minimize dog wear.

According to the Quaife website, the weight of the 61G gearbox is 75 kg (165 lbs). Is that heavy?
The crown-wheel diameter of the Quaife gearbox is 7.874" (200mm), which I think it's smaller than the street GT3 crown-wheel. Is the Cup GT3 crown-wheel the same diameter as the street GT3 part?
