Cool pic. Now it is so obvious as to why the 996 headers are such a restrictive design - Porsche obviously didn't have the width at the rear of the much narrower 996 to have a more centralized merger like we see above.

what should i do with the early 997 cup exhaust - does this fit on my 996 gt3 street (with rear bumper from 996cup?)

The street 997.2 center muffler (steel version, not the RS Ti version) is exactly the one Porsche Motorsport uses on all 991.1 Cups. Works without issues... They just close the upper holes with the plugs I mentioned earlier. I‘m not exactly sure but I think it‘s even in the 991.2 Cup.
I also ran this very exact setup on a 997.2 GT3 without any issues for more then 45k km (lots of Track useage included).
Mine blew out after 5k miles and 5 HPDE events. Now own a Dundon quiet lifetime muffler (around $3,000) -works well.
They tend to blow out on the rear along the seem - maybe it's seeing the increased pressure from the top pipe, not used on the cup cars.
Mine looked like this
Might want to pro-actively add a reinforcement like Fabspeed makes to prevent blow out with this solution, or have a local shop do it.
