Default BBS LM vs. RS-GT

I am looking to purchase wheels/tires for the upcoming DE season. I have a 2005 997S. I plan to run 18" wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport Cups. Between the BBS LM and the RS-GT, is one a better wheel than the other for this use? Also, would 8 1/2" fronts offer any advantage than the stock 8" wheel width on the fronts? Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello!

Afaik, the LM-rim is a bit lighter than the RS-GT. In my opinion, the LM also looks better. But that depends on your personal taste.

You could use 8,5" in the Front with 225s or 235s. I wouldn't use wider Tyres on 8,5s because of the traction. You don't want the car to understeer, do you?

Thanks for the info. I haven't had a problem with understeer - the car has plenty of power to kick the rear end out.

Actually, the RSGT's are 1 lb lighter each wheel than the LM's. I have both.

I've got 8.5 x 18 et50 rims on my 2000 S Boxster with 245/35 Dunlop SSR's. The SSR's run about a size wider, so they are more like a 255 in width. No rubbing and the traction is outstanding.

law,

The 8.5s should work fine. They will be just slightly heavier than an 8 inch wide wheel, but not by very much.

I use the BBS RS GT's as "track wheels" on my 986.

No complaints.....they are light, strong and look good.

I would say neither and suggest an alternative. There are better options that can get you the fitting you want and save you some money. I recently made had the same dilemma. I just got a custom made set of 3-piece Classic race wheels from CCW (Complete Custom Wheel, www.ccwheel.com). I wanted an extra inch of rim width front and rear (18x9.0"/18x11.0" wheels) and had a hard time finding this application for a reasonable price. A quick call to John at CCW was the answer. I am running GT3-sized Sport Cups (235/40 and 295/30) tires on the wider wheels. CCW custom makes every set like Fikse, Forgeline, etc. The difference is John at CCW has always geared his business for the racers at a more reasonable price. CCW is very well known in the racing communities and has a great reputation in the autocrossing and road racing communities. These wheels run $2000 a set for 18"s or about half the price of other 3-piece wheels or those BBS LM's. I went with a set of the clear annodized (light gray) centers since he already had them made. The wheels were complete and shipped 2 days after placing the order. I would image for a 997 with the wider bodywork that John could do a set of 18x9.0"/18x12.0" with the right offsets to fit. You should be able to run 235/40 and 315/30 tires on that setup.
